🔍 Identify Your Issue

  • Entire keyboard unresponsive — No keys work at all
  • Some keys not working — Specific keys fail
  • Keys typing double — One press types multiple characters
  • Keys feel stuck/mushy — Physical resistance issues
  • Wrong characters typed — Input doesn't match keys pressed
  • Keyboard works intermittently — Random failures

🛠️ Fix 1: Restart Your Mac

Start with the basics:

  1. Click Apple menu → Restart
  2. If keyboard is completely dead, hold power button for 10 seconds to force shutdown
  3. Wait 30 seconds, then power on
  4. Test keyboard immediately after restart

🛠️ Fix 2: Check for Software Issues

  1. Go to System Settings → Keyboard
  2. Check "Key repeat rate" isn't set to Off
  3. Check "Delay until repeat" settings
  4. Disable "Slow Keys" if enabled (Accessibility → Keyboard)
  5. Try creating a new user account and test keyboard there

🛠️ Fix 3: Reset SMC (Intel Macs)

For Intel-based MacBook Pro:

  1. Shut down your Mac
  2. Press and hold Shift + Control + Option on the left side + Power button for 10 seconds
  3. Release all keys
  4. Press power button to turn on

For Apple Silicon Macs: Simply shut down, wait 30 seconds, and restart. SMC is managed automatically.

🛠️ Fix 4: Reset NVRAM/PRAM

For Intel Macs:

  1. Shut down your Mac
  2. Turn on and immediately hold Option + Command + P + R
  3. Hold for 20 seconds (you may hear startup sound twice)
  4. Release and let Mac boot normally

Apple Silicon: NVRAM resets automatically on restart when needed.

🛠️ Fix 5: Boot to Safe Mode

Tests if third-party software is causing issues:

  1. Intel Mac: Restart, hold Shift until login window
  2. Apple Silicon: Shut down → Hold power until "Loading options" → Select startup disk → Hold Shift → Click "Continue in Safe Mode"
  3. Test keyboard in Safe Mode
  4. If keyboard works, a third-party app may be the culprit

🛠️ Fix 6: Clean the Keyboard

Debris under keys is a common cause, especially on butterfly keyboards:

  1. Turn off your Mac and unplug it
  2. Hold Mac at 75° angle (almost vertical)
  3. Use compressed air in a zigzag pattern across the keyboard
  4. Rotate Mac and repeat from different angles
  5. For sticky keys: lightly dampen a microfiber cloth with isopropyl alcohol (70%+)
  6. Gently clean around affected keys

🛠️ Fix 7: Check for Liquid Damage

Signs of liquid damage:

  • Sticky or mushy keys
  • Keys that don't register at all
  • Corrosion visible under keycaps
  • Random keyboard behavior

If liquid damage:

  1. Immediately power off and unplug
  2. Turn upside down to drain
  3. Do NOT use a hair dryer (can push liquid deeper)
  4. Let dry for 48-72 hours
  5. Professional cleaning is recommended

🛠️ Fix 8: Test with External Keyboard

  1. Connect a USB or Bluetooth keyboard
  2. If external keyboard works perfectly, internal keyboard hardware may be damaged
  3. This also helps you navigate while troubleshooting

🛠️ Fix 9: Check Keyboard Service Program

Apple has a free repair program for certain MacBook Pro models with butterfly keyboards:

  • MacBook Pro 13" (2016-2019)
  • MacBook Pro 15" (2016-2019)

Check eligibility at Apple's Keyboard Service Program

⚠️ Signs of Hardware Failure

  • Multiple keys fail in the same area
  • Keyboard issues after a drop or impact
  • Visible damage to keys or keyboard surface
  • Keyboard flex cable may be damaged
  • Top case replacement may be required (~$200-400)
