π Step 1: Identify the Symptom
- MagSafe LED doesn't light at all: Adapter, cable, or port fault
- MagSafe LED orange but battery not increasing: macOS battery protection (Optimized Charging at 80%)
- MagSafe LED green but "Not Charging": Battery full or near-full (above ~95%)
- "Not Charging" with USB-C under load: Adapter wattage below the 16-inch's draw β needs 96W+ via USB-C
- Charges on MagSafe but not USB-C (or vice versa): Isolates the failing path
β‘ Step 2: Wattage Requirements β Critical for the 16-inch
The 16-inch MacBook Pro has Apple's largest MacBook battery (99.6-100Wh) and draws more power than any other MacBook under sustained load:
- M1 Pro 16": 140W MagSafe 3 included; 96W+ USB-C for reliable charging under load
- M1 Max / M2 Pro / M2 Max / M3 Pro / M3 Max 16": 140W MagSafe 3 included; 96W minimum for USB-C under any real workload
- Using 30W or 45W USB-C: Shows "Not Charging" during intensive use β the charger can't keep up with CPU+GPU draw
- Using 67W USB-C: Charges when idle but may show "Not Charging" during sustained load
Rule: for reliable 16-inch charging, use the included 140W MagSafe 3, or a 96W+ USB-C adapter for USB-C charging.
π Step 3: Test MagSafe 3 Connection
- Disconnect and firmly reconnect MagSafe 3 β magnetic snap should be positive
- Check LED: orange = charging, green = full/near-full, no light = no power
- Try a different wall outlet
- Inspect MagSafe 3 cable for fraying at brick and connector ends
- Clean the MagSafe 3 port and connector face with a dry cloth
- If MagSafe has no LED: try USB-C charging to confirm system is otherwise working
π‘οΈ Step 4: Optimized Battery Charging
- Apple menu β System Settings β Battery β Optimized Battery Charging
- To charge to 100% immediately: hold Option + click battery icon β Charge to Full Now
- "Not Charging" at 80% while plugged in is Optimized Charging working as designed
π Step 5: SMC Reset (Apple Silicon)
- Apple menu β Shut Down β wait for complete power-off
- Wait 30 seconds
- Power back on
Apple Silicon Macs reset SMC on every full shutdown β no key combination needed.
π§Ή Step 6: Clean Charging Ports
MacBook Pro 16" has three Thunderbolt 4 ports plus MagSafe 3:
- Power off completely
- Wooden or plastic toothpick for Thunderbolt ports β inspect with flashlight
- Dry cloth for MagSafe 3 port β remove any metal particles on the magnetic face
- Compressed air for all ports
π Step 7: Battery Health
- Hold Option β click Apple menu β System Information β Power
- Check Cycle Count (rated 1,000) and Condition
- "Service Recommended" = battery replacement warranted on the 100Wh cell
