MacBook Not Turning On - Fix Guide
MacBook won't power on? Don't panic — most cases are fixable. Follow these steps to diagnose and fix the problem.
🔍 Quick Diagnosis
First, identify what's happening:
- No lights, no sound: Power issue (most common)
- Chime but black screen: Display or GPU issue
- Apple logo then dies: Software or storage issue
- Flashing folder icon: macOS can't be found
- Fans spin then stop: Hardware failure
🔌 Step 1: Check the Basics
- Try a different outlet — rule out dead outlets
- Check the charger: Look for frayed cables, bent pins, or damage
- Look for charging light: MagSafe should glow amber/green, USB-C Macs show battery icon briefly
- Let it charge: If completely dead, wait 10-15 minutes plugged in
- Try another charger: Borrow one or test at an Apple Store
⚡ Step 2: Force Restart
Your Mac might be frozen with a black screen:
- Hold the power button for 10 full seconds
- Wait 5 seconds
- Press power button again normally
On MacBooks with Touch ID, the power button is the Touch ID sensor (top right of keyboard).
🔄 Step 3: Reset SMC (Intel Macs)
The SMC controls power management. Resetting it fixes many power issues.
For MacBooks with T2 chip (2018+):
- Shut down your Mac
- Press and hold: Control + Option + Shift (left side) for 7 seconds
- While holding those, also press and hold the power button
- Hold all 4 keys for 7 more seconds
- Release all keys, wait a few seconds
- Press power button to turn on
For older MacBooks (2017 and earlier):
- Shut down your Mac
- Press and hold: Shift + Control + Option (left side) + Power button
- Hold for 10 seconds
- Release all keys
- Press power button to turn on
🍎 Step 3b: Reset for Apple Silicon Macs (M1/M2/M3)
Apple Silicon Macs don't have an SMC, but you can reset the system:
- Shut down your Mac (hold power 10 seconds if needed)
- Wait 30 seconds
- Press and hold the power button until you see "Loading startup options"
- If it shows options, select your startup disk and click Continue
- If nothing happens after 20 seconds, there may be a hardware issue
🧠 Step 4: Reset NVRAM/PRAM (Intel Macs Only)
NVRAM stores startup settings. Corrupted NVRAM can prevent booting.
- Shut down your Mac
- Turn it on and immediately press and hold: Option + Command + P + R
- Hold for about 20 seconds
- Release and let Mac start normally
Apple Silicon Macs reset NVRAM automatically when needed.
🖥️ Step 5: Check for Display Issues
Your Mac might be ON but the screen is off:
- Shine a flashlight at the screen at an angle — can you see a faint image? Backlight is dead.
- Connect to external monitor — if it works, the screen or cable is the issue
- Listen for startup chime or feel for fan/vibration
🔧 Step 6: Boot to Recovery Mode
Intel Macs: Hold Command + R while starting up
Apple Silicon: Hold the power button until you see "Loading startup options"
If Recovery Mode loads, your Mac works — it's a software issue. You can:
- Run Disk Utility to repair your drive
- Reinstall macOS
- Restore from Time Machine backup
⚠️ When It's Hardware
If none of the above works, you likely have a hardware failure:
- Dead battery: Common after 4-5 years, Mac won't turn on without power connected
- Failed logic board: Most serious issue, requires professional repair
- Liquid damage: Corrosion can cause intermittent or total failure
- Failed SSD: Mac won't boot if storage has died
