Spilled water, coffee, juice, or wine on your MacBook? The next 60 minutes are critical. This guide walks you through exactly what to do โ€” and what NOT to do โ€” to maximize the chance your MacBook survives.

๐Ÿšจ Emergency โ€” Do These Right Now

  1. Power off immediately โ€” hold the power button until it shuts off. Don't click "Shut Down." Force it off.
  2. Unplug everything โ€” power cable, USB-C hubs, external drives, all peripherals.
  3. Flip it upside down โ€” open the lid, turn the MacBook upside down like a tent so liquid drains out instead of deeper in.
  4. Blot, don't rub โ€” use a dry cloth or paper towels to absorb liquid from the surface. Don't press hard or spread it.
  5. Do NOT turn it back on โ€” not in an hour, not when it "looks dry." Wait at least 48 hours minimum.

Water damage kills MacBooks through two mechanisms: immediate short circuits (liquid bridges two conductors while power is on) and corrosion (residue from coffee, juice, or soda eats metal traces over days or weeks). Cutting power immediately stops the first. Proper drying prevents the second.

The First 30 Minutes

1Power off and disconnect โ€” immediately

If the MacBook is still on, every second counts. Electricity + liquid = corrosion and blown components. Hold the power button for 5-10 seconds to force power off. Do not use the software shutdown menu โ€” that takes too long and may trigger activity that spreads liquid through the logic board.

2Drain the liquid

With lid open at roughly 90ยฐ, flip the MacBook so the keyboard faces down. This uses gravity to drain liquid out through the keyboard instead of letting it pool on the logic board beneath. Hold this position for 5-10 minutes, continuing to blot the exterior.

3Wipe accessible surfaces

Use dry microfiber cloths or paper towels to absorb visible liquid from the keyboard, trackpad, ports, and display. Be gentle โ€” you're blotting, not wiping. Don't use compressed air at this stage โ€” it can push liquid deeper into the chassis.

โš ๏ธ Coffee, juice, and soda are far worse than water: Pure water is relatively benign once dry โ€” it doesn't conduct electricity well and leaves minimal residue. Coffee, juice, soda, wine, and beer contain sugars, acids, and minerals that leave conductive residue and aggressively corrode copper traces even after the liquid is "dry." If you spilled anything other than water, professional cleaning is strongly recommended regardless of whether the MacBook appears to work.

Drying (Hours 1โ€“48)

4Let it air dry โ€” tent position โ€” for at least 48 hours

Place the MacBook keyboard-side down in a tent (inverted V shape) on a dry surface. Leave it in a warm, dry area with good airflow. A room temperature of 65-75ยฐF is ideal. Don't use a hair dryer โ€” heat above 90ยฐF can warp the display and damage battery cells. Don't use a microwave. Don't put it in rice (rice is ineffective and can introduce starch debris).

5Use silica gel packets if available

Place the MacBook in a large bag or box with multiple silica gel desiccant packets โ€” the kind that come in shoe boxes, electronics packaging, etc. They actively absorb humidity from the air around the device. This is actually effective (unlike rice) because it lowers the relative humidity near the MacBook, accelerating evaporation from internal components.

648-hour rule โ€” do NOT power on early

The most common mistake is powering on "just to check" at 2-4 hours. The exterior may appear dry while internal components still have moisture trapped under chips, between board layers, and in connectors. Powering on prematurely with any residual moisture causes shorts that permanently destroy components that were otherwise fine. Wait the full 48 hours minimum โ€” 72 hours for heavy spills or sugary liquids.

After Drying: Testing & Assessment

7Power on carefully after 48+ hours

After the full drying period, connect the charger and press power. Watch for: normal startup chime and boot โ†’ good sign. Distorted display, flickering, no power, strange smells, or keys not working โ†’ stop immediately and seek professional service. Don't leave it unattended for the first 10 minutes of operation after liquid damage.

8Test all functions systematically

Work through: keyboard (every key), trackpad (click and gestures), display (all areas, no dead zones), speakers, microphone, camera, ports, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Note any issues โ€” liquid damage often causes subtle problems like one stuck key, intermittent port failure, or degraded battery capacity that appear days later as corrosion progresses.

9Professional cleaning even if it "works"

If you spilled anything other than pure water, strongly consider professional logic board cleaning even if the MacBook appears functional. Technicians use 99% isopropyl alcohol and ultrasonic cleaners to remove corrosive residue before it destroys traces over weeks. MacBooks that "work fine" after a coffee spill frequently fail 2-6 weeks later as the corrosion completes its work.

โœ… Apple's liquid damage stance: Apple's warranty explicitly excludes liquid damage. Apple's Liquid Contact Indicators (LCI) โ€” small stickers near ports that turn red when wet โ€” will show if liquid entered. Out-of-warranty liquid damage repair from Apple runs $299-599+ depending on model and damage extent. Third-party logic board repair specialists often achieve better results at lower cost for liquid damage specifically.

What Repair Actually Costs

Liquid damage repair cost depends on what was damaged: a keyboard-only spill caught immediately might need only a keyboard replacement ($150-250). A full logic board repair after an unchecked spill can run $400-800. Some damage is uneconomical to repair โ€” a MacBook Pro M3 with a destroyed logic board costs more to repair than it's worth.

Get a diagnosis before committing to repair. Reputable shops offer free diagnostics or charge a small bench fee that applies toward the repair cost.
