MacBook Keyboard Keys Stuck
MacBook keys feeling sticky, not clicking, or stuck down? Here's how to fix stuck keyboard keys on any MacBook model.
โ ๏ธ Before You Start
- Power off: Shut down your MacBook completely
- Unplug: Disconnect the charger
- No liquids inside: Never spray directly on keyboard
- Butterfly keyboards: 2015-2019 MacBooks need extra care
๐งน Cleaning Method 1: Compressed Air
Best for dust and debris under keys:
- Hold MacBook at 75-degree angle (almost vertical)
- Spray compressed air left to right across keyboard
- Rotate MacBook to right side, repeat spraying
- Rotate to left side, repeat again
- Use short bursts, keep can upright
๐งผ Cleaning Method 2: Isopropyl Alcohol
For sticky residue (from spills):
- Dampen lint-free cloth with 70% isopropyl alcohol
- Wring out excess - cloth should be barely damp
- Gently wipe around stuck key
- Press key repeatedly while wiping edges
- Let dry completely before powering on (10+ minutes)
๐ง Removing Individual Keys
โ ๏ธ Warning: Only do this on scissor-switch keyboards (2020+). Butterfly keyboards are very fragile!
- Use plastic spudger or guitar pick
- Slide under top edge of keycap
- Gently pry up until it pops off
- Clean underneath with compressed air
- Press keycap back down until it clicks
