First: Find What's Eating Space

Apple menu → About This Mac → Storage → Manage. Mac shows breakdown: Apps, Photos, Documents, etc. Click each category — see specific files.

Better: download OmniDiskSweeper (free) or use DaisyDisk ($10). Visual map shows what's actually big.

Common Culprits

  1. Old iOS backups — Finder → connect iPhone → see backups → delete old ones
  2. Photos library duplicates — Photos → Duplicates album (sidebar) → merge
  3. Docker images — Docker Desktop → Disk → delete unused images
  4. iCloud Drive optimized — System Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → 'Optimize Mac Storage' ON
  5. Mail attachments — Mail → Preferences → Accounts → delete old downloaded attachments
  6. Downloads folder — sort by size, delete old DMGs/zips/installers
  7. Logic/GarageBand loops — only download what you need
  8. Time Machine local snapshots — auto-cleanup after 30 days, but check

Optimize iCloud Photos

Photos → Preferences → 'Optimize Mac Storage'. Mac keeps thumbnails, full-res in iCloud. Saves 20-100GB. Only matters if you have iCloud photos enabled.

Move Photos to External SSD

Photos library can be moved. Quit Photos. Move /Pictures/Photos Library.photoslibrary to external SSD. Hold Option and reopen Photos → 'Choose Other Library' → pick external one. Now Photos lives on SSD.

CleanMyMac X (Last Resort)

If you can't free space manually, CleanMyMac X ($40) auto-finds: cache, logs, broken downloads, large/old files. Runs in background, frees 5-20GB. Some swear by it; some don't trust auto-cleaners. Verdict: useful for non-technical users.

Don't Use 'Delete Junk' from Sketchy Apps

Apps like 'MacKeeper' are malware. They charge $50, do nothing safe, and bury startup hooks. Avoid completely. Stick with: Apple's built-in storage panel, OmniDiskSweeper, or CleanMyMac X.
