Test the Display vs Test the GPU

Connect an external monitor via USB-C → HDMI adapter:

  • External monitor flickers too: GPU or logic board issue. Hardware repair needed (typically $400–$700).
  • External monitor is perfect: Display assembly is the problem. Could be loose flex cable (sometimes free at Apple) or full screen replacement ($499–$599).
  • Both flicker only after running Final Cut / Photoshop: Thermal throttling — clean the fans and intake vents.

Software Causes (Most Common)

Most MacBook Air flicker after a macOS update. Try in order:

  1. Update to the latest macOS minor version (e.g., 14.5 → 14.6)
  2. Boot in Safe Mode (hold Power until startup options appear, hold Shift, click Continue) — if no flicker in Safe Mode, a third-party app/driver is the cause
  3. Disable Handoff and AirPlay Receiver (Settings → General → AirDrop & Handoff)
  4. Reset SMC: shut down, unplug, hold power button 10 seconds, plug back in
  5. Sign out of iCloud, restart, sign back in

When It's a Loose Display Flex Cable

Sometimes the flex cable connecting the screen to the logic board works loose, especially after the lid has been opened/closed thousands of times. Symptoms:

  • Flicker only at certain lid angles
  • Closing the lid past 90° fixes or worsens it
  • Pressing on the bottom of the screen near the hinge changes the flicker

Apple sometimes reseats this for free under warranty or AppleCare+. Always describe it this way: 'flicker depends on lid angle' — that's the magic phrase.
