Performance: M4 vs M3
M4 is ~18% faster CPU, ~25% faster GPU, supports 16GB base RAM (M3 was 8GB base — actually a big deal). For typical Air buyer (web/email/video calls): difference is invisible.
RAM Matters More Than Chip
The real upgrade in 2025 was Apple finally making 16GB base on every Mac. M3 with 8GB feels cramped after a year. M3 with 16GB or M4 with 16GB are both fine for 5+ years.
Battery: Same
Both rated 18 hours video playback. Real world: 12-14 hours mixed use. M4 slightly better under load (more efficient cores).
Verdict
Buy M3 16GB refurb at $899 if budget tight. Saves $200, performance difference invisible for typical use, battery same, both have AppleCare+ available. Buy M4 if buying new — only $100 more new than M3 was.
Avoid: M3 8GB
If you find a $750 deal on M3 with 8GB RAM, walk away. 8GB is insufficient in 2026 for any browser-heavy workflow. False economy — get the 16GB version.
