MacBook Air M1 Not Charging

MacBook Air M1 (November 2020) uses USB-C only for charging β€” no MagSafe. At 5+ years old, USB-C port wear and battery degradation are increasingly common. Here's every fix for the M1 Air that won't charge.

⏱️ 5-20 minutes πŸ’ͺ Easy–Medium πŸ’° Free

πŸ” Step 1: Identify the Symptom

  • No charging indicator in menu bar: Cable, adapter, port, or depleted battery
  • "Not Charging" in battery menu while plugged in: Adapter wattage too low, or Optimized Battery Charging holding at 80%
  • Battery percentage not increasing: Under-powered adapter can't keep up with active use
  • Charges on one USB-C port but not the other: One port may be damaged β€” try both ports
  • Charges slowly: Using a 5W or 12W adapter β€” upgrade to 30W+ USB-C PD

Note: MacBook Air M1 has two USB-C / Thunderbolt ports and no MagSafe. Both ports support charging. If one port doesn't work, try the other.

⚑ Step 2: USB-C Adapter Wattage

MacBook Air M1 has a 49.9Wh battery. Low-wattage chargers can't keep up under active use:

  • 5W (iPhone charger): Completely inadequate β€” battery will discharge while plugged in under load
  • 18W-30W USB-C PD: Slow but functional for light tasks
  • 30W USB-C PD: Apple's original included adapter β€” adequate for most use
  • 45W-67W USB-C PD: Faster charge, better for heavy workloads

Check the wattage printed on your adapter. The original 30W adapter that shipped with the M1 Air is still the most common pairing.

πŸ”Œ Step 3: Test the USB-C Cable

Not all USB-C cables support Power Delivery at the wattage needed for a MacBook:

  1. Use the cable that came with the M1 Air β€” it's USB-C rated for the full 30W PD
  2. Look for cables labeled USB-C PD or rated at 60W+
  3. Avoid thin or generic USB-C cables β€” these often cap at 5-7.5W regardless of adapter
  4. Try a completely different cable to rule out cable failure

πŸ›‘οΈ Step 4: Optimized Battery Charging

macOS holds the battery at 80% overnight to reduce long-term degradation:

  1. Apple menu β†’ System Settings β†’ Battery β†’ Optimized Battery Charging
  2. To charge to 100% now: hold Option and click the battery icon β†’ Charge to Full Now
  3. "Not Charging" at 80% is intentional behavior β€” leave plugged in and macOS will complete the charge

πŸ”„ Step 5: SMC Reset (Apple Silicon)

On M1 MacBooks, the SMC equivalent resets on every full shutdown:

  1. Apple menu β†’ Shut Down β€” wait for complete power-off
  2. Wait 30 seconds
  3. Power back on normally

No key combination is needed. A full shutdown on Apple Silicon handles this automatically.

🧹 Step 6: Clean USB-C Ports

M1 Air is 5+ years old β€” USB-C port debris is possible:

  1. Power off completely
  2. Use a wooden or plastic toothpick β€” never metal in USB-C
  3. Inspect with a flashlight β€” debris at port bottom
  4. Gently scrape out, then compressed air
  5. Try both Thunderbolt ports after cleaning

πŸ”‹ Step 7: Battery Health

  1. Hold Option β†’ click Apple menu β†’ System Information β†’ Power
  2. Check Cycle Count (rated 1,000 cycles) and Condition
  3. M1 Air launched November 2020 β€” at 5+ years, check for degradation
  4. "Service Recommended" = battery replacement warranted
