macOS update stuck downloading, failing at installation, showing an error, or the update just disappears from Software Update? These fixes work for macOS Sequoia, Sonoma, and Ventura on all Macs including M1, M2, M3, M4, and Intel models.

โšก Most Common Fix

Delete the partially-downloaded update and start fresh: System Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Storage โ†’ look for the update file (e.g., "macOS Sequoia") โ†’ delete it. Then restart, go back to Software Update, and download again. Corrupted partial downloads cause the majority of update failures.

Diagnose the Problem First

1Identify what's actually failing

Update issues fall into four categories: (1) Won't download โ€” stuck at 0% or a percentage, (2) Downloads but won't install โ€” fails at the installation screen, (3) Installs but gets stuck โ€” progress bar freezes during install, (4) Update disappears โ€” Software Update says "Mac is up to date" but you know it isn't. Each has different causes and fixes. Identify which one you're seeing before proceeding.

Won't Download

2Check Apple's system status

Visit apple.com/support/systemstatus โ€” look for "macOS Software Update." If Apple's update servers are experiencing issues (common on major release days), there's nothing to fix on your end โ€” wait a few hours. Major macOS releases cause massive traffic spikes to Apple's CDN servers.

3Free up storage space

macOS updates require significant free space โ€” often 12-20 GB for the installer plus working space during installation. Apple menu โ†’ About This Mac โ†’ More Info โ†’ Storage. If you have less than 20 GB free, the download will fail or the installation will abort. Delete large files, empty Trash, and use System Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Storage โ†’ Recommendations to offload unused content.

4Delete the partial download and retry

Open Finder โ†’ Applications folder โ†’ look for the macOS installer (e.g., "Install macOS Sequoia"). Drag it to Trash and empty Trash. Also check System Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Storage โ†’ macOS [version] and delete any cached installer. Then restart and try Software Update again. A fresh download often succeeds where a partial one fails repeatedly.

5Use Terminal to force a software update check

Open Terminal and run:

softwareupdate --list

This queries Apple's update servers directly and lists available updates. If your update appears here but not in System Settings, run:

softwareupdate --install --all

This forces the download and installation through the command line, bypassing the System Settings UI which sometimes gets stuck in bad states.

Downloads But Won't Install

6Check your Mac's compatibility

Not all Macs can run the latest macOS. For macOS Sequoia (macOS 15): requires iMac 2019 or later, MacBook Air 2020 or later, MacBook Pro 2018 or later, Mac mini 2018 or later. If your Mac is older than these cutoffs, Software Update won't offer the upgrade โ€” and shouldn't. Check apple.com/macos/sequoia/specs for the full compatibility list.

7Disable startup items and security software

Third-party antivirus, VPN software, and security tools can block the macOS installer from making system-level changes. Quit all third-party apps before installing: System Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Login Items & Extensions โ†’ disable anything non-Apple. Also turn off any VPN. Then attempt the installation again.

Installation Gets Stuck

8Wait longer than you think you should

macOS installations genuinely take 20-60 minutes on most Macs, with the progress bar appearing to freeze for 10-15 minutes at certain phases (particularly during "Setting up your Mac" and firmware updates on Apple Silicon). Do not force-restart during installation unless it's been completely static for over 2 hours with no disk activity. Force-restarting mid-install can corrupt the system.

9Install from Recovery Mode

If the normal installer fails repeatedly: restart into Recovery Mode. Apple Silicon: hold power button at startup. Intel: hold Cmd+R at startup. In Recovery, select "Reinstall macOS" from the utilities menu. This downloads and installs directly from Apple's servers and bypasses most installer corruption issues. Your data stays intact โ€” this is a repair install, not a wipe.

โš ๏ธ If update keeps reverting: If macOS installs, restarts, then reverts to the previous version with an error, there's a deeper issue โ€” often a failing SSD sector, a T2 chip issue (Intel), or a system file permission problem. Run First Aid on your startup disk: Recovery Mode โ†’ Disk Utility โ†’ select Macintosh HD โ†’ First Aid. If errors are found and can't be repaired, the drive may be failing.
10Create a bootable installer USB

Download the full macOS installer from the App Store (select "Download" not "Update"). Then use Terminal to create a bootable USB drive:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sequoia.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

Boot from the USB (hold Option at startup on Intel, or press and hold power button on Apple Silicon) and install from there. This is the most reliable method for stubborn update failures โ€” completely bypasses network download issues and system-level corruption.

โœ… Apple Silicon firmware updates: On M1, M2, M3, and M4 Macs, macOS updates also update the system firmware โ€” a step that doesn't exist on Intel Macs. This is what makes Apple Silicon macOS installs take longer and sometimes appear stuck. The firmware update phase happens before the Apple logo appears and can look like nothing is happening for several minutes. This is normal โ€” do not interrupt it.
