Mac Won't Update? 10 Fixes for macOS Update Failures

Update issues fall into four categories: (1) Won't download — stuck at 0% or a percentage, (2) Downloads but won't install — fails at the installation screen, (3) Installs but gets stuck — progress bar freezes during install, (4) Update disappears — Software Update says "Mac is up to date" but you know it isn't. Each has different causes and fixes. Identify which one you're seeing before proceeding.

Visit apple.com/support/systemstatus — look for "macOS Software Update." If Apple's update servers are experiencing issues (common on major release days), there's nothing to fix on your end — wait a few hours. Major macOS releases cause massive traffic spikes to Apple's CDN servers.

macOS updates require significant free space — often 12-20 GB for the installer plus working space during installation. Apple menu → About This Mac → More Info → Storage. If you have less than 20 GB free, the download will fail or the installation will abort. Delete large files, empty Trash, and use System Settings → General → Storage → Recommendations to offload unused content.

Open Finder → Applications folder → look for the macOS installer (e.g., "Install macOS Sequoia"). Drag it to Trash and empty Trash. Also check System Settings → General → Storage → macOS [version] and delete any cached installer. Then restart and try Software Update again. Third-party antivirus, VPN software, and security tools can block the macOS installer from making system-level changes. Quit all third-party apps before installing: System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions → disable anything non-Apple. Also turn off any VPN. Then attempt the installation again.

macOS installations genuinely take 20-60 minutes on most Macs, with the progress bar appearing to freeze for 10-15 minutes at certain phases (particularly during "Setting up your Mac" and firmware updates on Apple Silicon).
