Mac Universal Clipboard Not Working - Fix Guide

⏱️ 10-15 minutes 📊 Easy 💰 Free (software fix)

Universal Clipboard lets you copy text, images, and files on one Apple device and paste on another. When it stops working, here's how to fix it.

📋 Requirements

  • Same Apple ID: All devices signed into same iCloud account
  • Bluetooth: Enabled on all devices
  • WiFi: All devices on same network OR both WiFi & Bluetooth on
  • Handoff: Enabled on all devices
  • Proximity: Devices within Bluetooth range (~30 feet)
✅ Enable Handoff (Required)

On Mac:

  1. System Settings → General → AirDrop & Handoff
  2. Enable "Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices"

On iPhone/iPad:

  1. Settings → General → AirPlay & Handoff
  2. Enable "Handoff"
🔧 Troubleshooting Steps

1. Check Bluetooth & WiFi

Both must be ON on all devices:

  • Mac: Click Control Center → toggle Bluetooth & WiFi on
  • iPhone: Settings → Bluetooth & WiFi both ON

2. Verify Same Apple ID

  • Mac: System Settings → [Your Name] at top
  • iPhone: Settings → [Your Name] at top
  • Must be identical Apple ID on all devices

3. Toggle Handoff Off/On

  1. Disable Handoff on all devices
  2. Wait 30 seconds
  3. Re-enable Handoff on all devices

4. Restart All Devices

A simple restart often fixes Continuity features:

  • Restart Mac (Apple menu → Restart)
  • Restart iPhone (hold Side + Volume, slide to power off)

5. Sign Out/In to iCloud

  1. On Mac: System Settings → [Your Name] → Sign Out
  2. Restart Mac
  3. Sign back in
  4. Repeat on iPhone if needed
⏱️ Clipboard Timeout

Universal Clipboard content expires after about 2 minutes. If you copy something, paste quickly on the other device.

📁 Large Files Not Copying?
  • Large images or files may take longer to transfer
  • Very large files may not work — use AirDrop instead
  • Check both devices have adequate storage
🔄 Reset Network Settings

On iPhone (if still not working):

  1. Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
  2. Reset → Reset Network Settings
  3. Reconnect to WiFi after reset
🛠️ Reset Bluetooth (Mac)
  1. Hold Shift + Option, click Bluetooth icon in menu bar
  2. Select "Reset the Bluetooth module"
  3. Restart Mac
