Mac Trackpad Not Clicking
MacBook trackpad won't click or has no haptic feedback? Fix Force Touch and click issues on MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.
🔍 Trackpad Types
- Force Touch (2015+) — Doesn't physically click; uses haptic feedback
- Mechanical (older) — Physically clicks like a button
Force Touch trackpads won't work when Mac is off — this is normal.
🛠️ Fix 1: Check Trackpad Settings
- System Settings → Trackpad
- Check "Click" pressure setting (Light, Medium, Firm)
- Try different pressure settings
- Make sure "Tap to click" is configured as desired
- Check "Force Click and haptic feedback" is enabled
🛠️ Fix 2: Enable Tap to Click (Workaround)
- System Settings → Trackpad → Point & Click
- Enable "Tap to click"
- This lets you tap instead of pressing to click
🛠️ Fix 3: Restart Your Mac
- Apple menu → Restart
- If trackpad doesn't work, use keyboard: Control + Eject (or Power)
- Test trackpad after restart
🛠️ Fix 4: Reset SMC (Intel Macs)
SMC controls trackpad hardware:
- Shut down Mac
- Press Shift + Control + Option (left side) + Power for 10 seconds
- Release all keys
- Turn on Mac
Apple Silicon: Shut down, wait 30 seconds, restart.
🛠️ Fix 5: Reset NVRAM
- Shut down Mac
- Turn on, immediately hold Option + Command + P + R
- Hold for 20 seconds
- Release and let Mac boot
🛠️ Fix 6: Check for Swollen Battery
A swelling battery pushes against the trackpad:
- Look at trackpad — is it bulging upward?
- Does Mac wobble when on a flat surface?
- Is the bottom case separating?
- If yes: Stop using immediately! Swollen battery is a fire risk.
🛠️ Fix 7: Boot in Safe Mode
Intel Mac:
- Restart, hold Shift during boot
Apple Silicon:
- Shut down → Hold power → Options → Shift + Continue in Safe Mode
If trackpad works in Safe Mode, a software conflict exists.
🛠️ Fix 8: Delete Trackpad Preferences
- Open Finder → Go → Go to Folder
- Type: ~/Library/Preferences/
- Find and delete: com.apple.AppleMultitouchTrackpad.plist
- Also delete: com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.trackpad.plist
- Restart Mac
🛠️ Fix 9: Use External Mouse Temporarily
While troubleshooting:
- Connect USB or Bluetooth mouse
- This allows you to navigate and adjust settings
- You can also use keyboard navigation (Tab, Enter, Space)
⚠️ Signs of Hardware Failure
- No haptic feedback at all (Force Touch)
- Trackpad physically stuck down
- Swollen battery pushing on trackpad
- Liquid damage indicators triggered
- Trackpad works intermittently or in certain areas only
