⏱️ 5-15 minutes 💪 Easy 💰 Free

📋 First: Check Compatibility

Sidecar requires specific hardware:

Compatible Macs (2016 or later):

  • MacBook Pro 2016+
  • MacBook Air 2018+
  • MacBook 2016+
  • iMac 2017+ or iMac Pro
  • Mac mini 2018+
  • Mac Pro 2019+
  • Mac Studio (all models)

Compatible iPads:

  • iPad Pro (all models)
  • iPad Air 3rd gen+
  • iPad 6th gen+
  • iPad mini 5th gen+

Software required: macOS Catalina (10.15) or later + iPadOS 13 or later

🔑 Fix #1: Same Apple ID Required

Both devices must use the same Apple ID:

  • Mac: System Settings → Apple ID → Check signed-in account
  • iPad: Settings → [Your Name] → Check Apple ID
  • Sign out and back in on both if different
  • Two-factor authentication must be enabled on your Apple ID

📡 Fix #2: Enable Required Settings

These must be ON for Sidecar to work:

On Mac:

  • Wi-Fi: Must be turned on (even for wired connection)
  • Bluetooth: Must be enabled
  • Handoff: System Settings → General → AirDrop & Handoff → Enable Handoff

On iPad:

  • Bluetooth: Settings → Bluetooth → ON
  • Wi-Fi: Settings → Wi-Fi → ON
  • Handoff: Settings → General → AirPlay & Handoff → Handoff ON

🔌 Fix #3: Try Wired Connection

If wireless Sidecar fails, use a cable:

  • Connect iPad to Mac with USB or USB-C cable
  • If prompted, tap Trust on iPad
  • Go to System Settings → Displays
  • Click the + button and select your iPad
  • Wired connection is more stable and has less lag

🔄 Fix #4: Restart Both Devices

A simple restart often fixes connectivity:

Restart Mac:

  • Apple menu → Restart

Restart iPad:

  • Hold Power + Volume (Face ID) or just Power (Home button)
  • Slide to power off, wait 30 seconds, power on
📶 Fix #5: Network Troubleshooting

For wireless Sidecar, devices must be close:

  • Keep iPad within 30 feet of Mac
  • Both should be on same Wi-Fi network
  • Disable VPN on both devices temporarily
  • Turn off Personal Hotspot on iPad
  • Avoid using internet sharing on Mac
⬆️ Fix #6: Update Software

Ensure both devices have latest updates:

  • Mac: System Settings → General → Software Update
  • iPad: Settings → General → Software Update
  • Older software versions have known Sidecar bugs
🔧 Fix #7: Reset Network Settings

If nothing else works, reset network on iPad:

  • Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPad → Reset → Reset Network Settings
  • This clears saved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections
  • Reconnect to Wi-Fi and try Sidecar again
🖥️ Fix #8: Check Display Arrangement

iPad might be connected but not visible:

  • System Settings → Displays → Arrange
  • Look for your iPad in the display arrangement
  • Drag it to match your physical setup
  • Check if it's set to "Mirror" instead of "Extend"
