How to Boot Mac into Recovery Mode

macOS Recovery is a built-in rescue system that lets you reinstall macOS, repair your disk, reset your password, and more β€” all without booting into your main OS. Here's how to enter it on any Mac.

⏱️ 2-5 min πŸ’ͺ Easy πŸ’» All Mac Models (Apple Silicon + Intel)

Apple Silicon vs. Intel Mac β€” Key Difference

The method is completely different depending on your Mac chip. Check which chip you have: Apple Menu β†’ About This Mac. Look for M1, M2, M3, M4 (Apple Silicon) or Intel Core (Intel).
  • Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4): Hold the power button until you see startup options, then click Options
  • Intel Mac: Hold Cmd + R immediately after pressing the power button

How to Enter Recovery Mode

Apple Silicon M1, M2, M3, M4 Macs

Works on: MacBook Air (M1 and later), MacBook Pro (M1 and later), Mac mini (M1 and later), iMac (M1 and later), Mac Studio, Mac Pro (M2 and later)

  1. Shut down your Mac completely (Apple Menu β†’ Shut Down, wait for it to fully power off)
  2. Press and hold the power button β€” keep holding it even after the screen turns on
  3. Keep holding until you see "Loading startup options…"
  4. Release the power button
  5. You'll see your startup disk and an Options gear icon β€” click Options
  6. Click Continue
  7. You're now in macOS Recovery
Tip: If you see the login screen instead, you didn't hold long enough. Shut down completely and try again β€” hold the power button for a full 10+ seconds.

Intel Intel Mac (2019 and earlier)

Works on: Intel MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, iMac, Mac Pro (all Intel models)

  1. Restart or power on your Mac
  2. Immediately hold Cmd (⌘) + R β€” press these keys the instant you hear the startup chime or see the screen flash
  3. Keep holding until you see the Apple logo or spinning globe
  4. Release the keys
  5. You're now in macOS Recovery
Timing is critical on Intel: You must press Cmd + R within the first second of startup. If macOS begins loading, restart and try again β€” faster this time.

Alternative Boot Keys for Intel Macs

Intel Macs have additional recovery boot options:

  • Cmd + R β€” Standard Recovery (reinstall current macOS version)
  • Option + Cmd + R β€” Internet Recovery (installs latest compatible macOS)
  • Shift + Option + Cmd + R β€” Internet Recovery (installs macOS that came with your Mac)
Use Internet Recovery if your internal Recovery partition is corrupted or missing. It downloads macOS from Apple's servers β€” requires Wi-Fi.

What You Can Do in Recovery Mode

Reinstall macOS

Click "Reinstall macOS" to reinstall the operating system without deleting your files. This fixes software corruption, missing system files, and update issues.

Your personal files, apps, and settings are preserved during a reinstall.

Disk Utility β€” Repair or Erase Your Drive

Open Disk Utility from the Recovery menu to:

  • Run First Aid to repair disk errors
  • Erase the drive to start fresh
  • Check disk health and partition layout
Erasing your drive deletes everything. Only do this before a clean reinstall and after backing up.

Restore from Time Machine Backup

Connect your Time Machine backup drive, then select "Restore from Time Machine" to roll back your entire system to a previous working state.

Reset Admin Password

If you've forgotten your Mac password:

  1. In Recovery, go to the menu bar: Utilities β†’ Terminal
  2. Type resetpassword and press Enter
  3. Follow the prompts to reset the password for your account
On Apple Silicon Macs, you can also reset the password through the Activation Lock / Recovery Key flow without using Terminal.

Change Startup Security Settings (Apple Silicon)

On M1/M2/M3/M4 Macs, Recovery also lets you:

  • Allow booting from external drives
  • Change security policy (Full Security β†’ Reduced Security)
  • Enable kernel extensions for development

Access via: Utilities β†’ Startup Security Utility

Recovery Mode Not Working?

If you can't enter Recovery Mode after multiple attempts, your internal SSD may be failing, or there may be a firmware issue. On Apple Silicon Macs, a Mac in DFU mode requires Apple Configurator 2 on a second Mac to restore. This is advanced territory β€” professional help is recommended.
