The current Mac Pro (M2 Ultra) launched June 2023. Apple skipped the M3 generation entirely for the Mac Pro โ likely because the M3 Ultra never shipped, and the M3 family was always considered a stopgap due to TSMC's enhanced 3nm process delays.
Most reliable rumor sources point to either late 2026 (October-November) or early 2027 (Q1) for the Mac Pro M4. The launch is expected to coincide with the introduction of the M4 Ultra chip, or a hypothetical higher-tier chip sometimes called "M4 Extreme."
This is the most speculation-heavy part of the Mac Pro M4 story. There are two main theories:
Apple uses the same M4 Ultra chip across Mac Studio and Mac Pro, with Mac Pro's only differentiator being PCIe expansion and higher chassis cooling capacity. This would simplify Apple's chip lineup but doesn't give the Mac Pro a meaningful chip advantage.
Apple develops a higher-tier chip exclusively for the Mac Pro โ essentially "two M4 Ultras fused together." This would deliver the kind of compute density that competes with high-end Threadripper / Xeon workstations. Apple reportedly worked on this for the M2 generation but cancelled it.
The current Mac Pro starts at $6,999 (M2 Ultra base). The Mac Pro M4 is widely expected to start at the same price point or slightly lower if Apple keeps M4 Ultra-only configurations. If an M4 Extreme is introduced, base pricing could climb to $7,999-$9,999.
Mac Pro buyers historically configure heavily โ most Mac Pros sold are configured between $10,000-$25,000 with maxed memory, storage, and GPU options where available.
The current Mac Pro has 6 PCIe Gen 4 slots. Mac Pro M4 is expected to upgrade to PCIe Gen 5, doubling per-slot bandwidth.
This matters for a specific user base: pro audio engineers who use Pro Tools or Logic with proprietary DSP cards (Avid HDX, Universal Audio UAD-2), video professionals with capture cards (AJA, Blackmagic), and certain scientific/research workflows that depend on PCIe accelerators.
For everyone else โ including most video editors using software encoding, 3D artists, ML researchers using unified memory โ the Mac Studio M4 Ultra delivers identical compute performance without the PCIe overhead. Mac Studio is also significantly cheaper.
| Feature | Mac Studio M4 Ultra | Mac Pro M4 (expected) |

| Max RAM | 256GB unified | 256GB-512GB unified (estimated) |
| PCIe slots | 0 | 6 (Gen 5 expected) |
| Thunderbolt | 6ร TB5 | 6-8ร TB5 (estimated) |
| Starting price | $3,999 | $6,999-$8,999 (estimated) |
| Size | Compact (3.7" tall) | Tower |
| Best for | Most pro users | PCIe-dependent workflows |
The 32" Pro Display XDR pairs naturally with the Mac Pro โ 6K, reference modes, 1,600 nits HDR. The Pro Stand is sold separately and is one of Apple's most controversial accessories due to pricing, but it's the only stand that integrates fully.
Shop Pro Display XDR โIf you don't need the Pro Display XDR's HDR reference modes, the Studio Display delivers 5K resolution at a much more reasonable price. Most Mac Pro buyers actually choose Studio Display when they don't have a specific HDR mastering need.
Shop Apple Studio Display โMac Pro components are user-upgradable in ways no other current Mac is โ RAM, storage, PCIe cards.
