Mac Mini Not Turning On - Troubleshooting Guide
Mac Mini won't power on when you press the button? Work through these fixes before assuming it's dead.
🔌 Fix #1: Check Power Basics
- Is the power cable fully plugged in? Check both ends — wall and Mac Mini
- Try a different outlet — Rule out a dead outlet
- Try a different power cable — If you have another Mac power cable
- Check surge protector/UPS — Make sure it's on and working
- Avoid power strips — Plug directly into wall outlet to test
⏰ Fix #2: Press and Hold Power Button
Sometimes the Mac Mini needs a longer press:
- Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds
- Release and wait 5 seconds
- Press the power button normally
Note: The power button is on the back of the Mac Mini (round button on the right side).
🔄 Fix #3: Power Cycle
- Unplug the power cable from the Mac Mini
- Wait 30 seconds
- Plug the power cable back in
- Wait 5 seconds, then press the power button
⚡ Fix #4: Reset SMC (Intel Mac Mini)
For Intel-based Mac Mini (2018 and earlier):
- Unplug the power cord
- Wait 15 seconds
- Plug the power cord back in
- Wait 5 seconds
- Press the power button
For Apple Silicon Mac Mini (M1/M2/M4): No SMC to reset — just do a power cycle as described above.
🖥️ Fix #5: Check for Signs of Power
Look for any indication the Mac Mini is receiving power:
- Status light on front — Should glow when powered on
- Fan noise — Listen for any sound when pressing power
- Connected peripherals — Do USB devices light up briefly?
If absolutely nothing happens — no light, no sound — it's likely a power supply or logic board issue.
🖱️ Fix #6: Disconnect All Peripherals
A faulty peripheral can prevent startup:
- Unplug everything except power cable
- Remove all USB devices, external drives, displays
- Try powering on with nothing connected
- If it works, reconnect devices one by one to find the culprit
📺 Fix #7: Check Display Connection
Your Mac Mini might be on but not displaying:
- Try a different display cable (HDMI, Thunderbolt, USB-C)
- Try a different monitor/TV
- Press Control + Shift + Eject or Control + Shift + Power to wake display
- Listen for the startup chime (older models) or fan spin
🔧 Fix #8: Reset NVRAM (Intel Mac Mini)
For Intel Mac Mini:
- Press power button
- Immediately hold Option + Command + P + R
- Keep holding for 20 seconds
- Release and let it boot normally
Apple Silicon: NVRAM resets automatically when needed.
⚠️ Signs of Hardware Failure
- No response at all — Power supply may be dead
- Turns on briefly then off — Logic board or power issue
- Burning smell — Stop immediately, do not use
- Clicking sounds — Could be hard drive failure (older models)
- After power surge/lightning — Power supply or logic board damage
