Fixes to Try

1 Check Microphone Permissions

Apps must be granted microphone access explicitly:

  1. Go to System Settings โ†’ Privacy & Security โ†’ Microphone
  2. Find the app (Zoom, Teams, FaceTime, Chrome, etc.)
  3. Toggle it ON
  4. Fully quit and reopen the app

2 Check Input Source Selection

Mac may be using the wrong microphone:

  1. Go to System Settings โ†’ Sound โ†’ Input
  2. Make sure "MacBook Microphone" or "Built-in Microphone" is selected
  3. Speak and watch the input level meter โ€” it should move
  4. Adjust the Input Volume slider if it's too low
Headset plugged in? Mac may be using the headset mic. Unplug headphones and check if built-in mic works.

3 Check In-App Microphone Settings

Many apps have their own audio input settings:

  • Zoom: Settings โ†’ Audio โ†’ Microphone โ†’ select built-in mic
  • Teams: Settings โ†’ Devices โ†’ Microphone
  • Google Meet: Settings (gear icon) โ†’ Audio
  • Make sure the app isn't muted within its own settings

4 Reset Core Audio

Restarting the audio daemon often fixes mic issues:

  1. Open Terminal
  2. Run: sudo killall coreaudiod
  3. Enter your password if prompted
  4. Wait a few seconds for Core Audio to restart
  5. Test your microphone

5 Test Microphone in Voice Memos

Quickly verify if the hardware works:

  1. Open Voice Memos (search in Spotlight)
  2. Press the red record button
  3. Speak and play back โ€” if you hear yourself, hardware is fine
  4. If no audio, the issue is likely hardware or a low-level driver problem

6 Check for macOS Updates

  1. Go to System Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Software Update
  2. Install any available updates
  3. Restart and test the microphone

7 Restart Your Mac

A full restart clears audio driver problems:

  1. Apple menu โ†’ Restart
  2. After reboot, test the mic in Voice Memos first
  3. Then test in your video call app

8 Boot in Safe Mode

Check if a third-party app is interfering:

Apple Silicon: Shut down โ†’ hold power โ†’ Shift + Continue in Safe Mode

Intel Mac: Restart โ†’ hold Shift until login screen

Test mic in Safe Mode. If it works, a third-party app is causing the issue.
