Forgot Mac Password - Reset Guide
Locked out of your Mac? Can't remember your password? Here's how to reset your Mac login password and get back in.
🔐 Method 1: Reset with Apple ID (Easiest)
If you linked your Mac account to your Apple ID, this is the easiest way:
- At the login screen, enter wrong password 3 times
- Click "Reset it using your Apple ID" when it appears
- Enter your Apple ID email and password
- Follow prompts to create a new Mac password
- Log in with your new password
This only works if you previously enabled "Allow user to reset password using Apple ID" in System Preferences.
🔐 Method 2: Reset Using Another Admin Account
If your Mac has another admin user:
- Log in with the other admin account
- Go to System Settings → Users & Groups
- Click the lock icon and enter admin password
- Select the locked account
- Click Reset Password
- Enter a new password
- Log out and log in with the reset account
🔐 Method 3: Recovery Mode Password Reset
For Apple Silicon Macs (M1/M2/M3/M4):
- Shut down your Mac completely
- Press and hold the Power button until you see "Loading startup options"
- Click Options, then click Continue
- Select a user you know the password for, or click "Forgot all passwords?"
- From the menu bar: Utilities → Terminal
- Type: resetpassword and press Enter
- Follow the Reset Password assistant
- Select your startup disk and user account
- Enter a new password
- Restart your Mac
For Intel Macs:
- Shut down your Mac completely
- Turn on Mac, immediately hold Command + R
- Keep holding until you see the Apple logo
- When Recovery Mode loads, go to Utilities → Terminal
- Type: resetpassword and press Enter
- Follow the Reset Password assistant
- Select your startup disk and user account
- Enter a new password
- Restart your Mac
🔐 Method 4: FileVault Recovery Key
If FileVault is enabled and you have a recovery key:
- At the login screen, enter wrong password 3 times
- Click "Reset it using your recovery key"
- Enter your FileVault recovery key (24 characters)
- Create a new password
- Log in with the new password
Your recovery key was shown when you enabled FileVault. Check your password manager, iCloud Keychain, or anywhere you may have saved it.
🔐 Method 5: iCloud Password Reset (FileVault)
If you enabled FileVault with iCloud recovery:
- At the login screen, enter wrong password 3 times
- Click option to reset using iCloud/Apple ID
- Enter your Apple ID credentials
- Wait for verification (may take a few minutes)
- Create new password when prompted
⚠️ If You Still Can't Reset Password
If none of the above methods work:
- Erase Mac (last resort): You can erase and reinstall macOS from Recovery Mode, but you'll lose all data
- Contact Apple Support: Call 1-800-275-2273 for additional verification options
- Visit Apple Store: Bring proof of purchase and ID
💡 Tips to Prevent Future Lockouts

- Save FileVault key: Store recovery key in password manager
- Create second admin: Have a backup admin account
- Use Apple Watch unlock: System Settings → Touch ID & Password → Apple Watch
