Mac Not Recognizing External Hard Drive? How to Fix It

External drive not showing up on your Mac desktop or in Finder? These fixes work for USB, USB-C, Thunderbolt, and external SSDs on all Macs.

⏱️ 5-20 min 💪 Easy to Moderate 💻 All Macs

Why Your Mac Won't Recognize the Drive

  • Loose connection: Cable or port issue
  • Wrong format: Drive formatted for Windows (NTFS) may be read-only or invisible
  • Finder settings: External drives hidden in Finder preferences
  • Drive needs power: Bus-powered drives need enough USB power
  • Corrupted directory: Drive errors preventing mount
  • Failing drive: Hardware failure

Fixes to Try

1 Check Physical Connection

  1. Unplug and firmly reconnect the cable
  2. Try a different USB/USB-C port on your Mac
  3. Try a different cable — cables fail more often than drives
  4. If using a hub, connect directly to Mac instead
  5. Listen for the drive spinning up — silence may mean no power

2 Check Finder Preferences

External drives may be hidden in Finder:

  1. Open Finder
  2. Go to Finder → Settings (or Preferences)
  3. Click the General tab
  4. Make sure "External disks" is checked under "Show these items on the desktop"
  5. Also check the Sidebar tab — enable "External disks" there too

3 Check Disk Utility

Drive may appear in Disk Utility but not be mounted:

  1. Open Disk Utility (search in Spotlight)
  2. Look for your drive in the left sidebar
  3. If it appears greyed out, click it and click Mount
  4. If it shows errors, click First Aid to repair
Not showing in Disk Utility at all? The drive may not be getting power, the cable is faulty, or the drive hardware has failed.

4 Fix NTFS Drives (Windows-Formatted)

Macs can read NTFS drives but not always mount them automatically:

  • NTFS drives should appear in Disk Utility — try mounting manually
  • For full read/write access, use a third-party tool like Paragon NTFS for Mac
  • Or reformat to exFAT (works on both Mac and Windows)
Warning: Reformatting erases all data. Back up first!

5 Run First Aid in Disk Utility

  1. Open Disk Utility
  2. Select the external drive
  3. Click First Aid → Run
  4. Let it complete — this can take several minutes for large drives
  5. If errors are found and repaired, try mounting again

6 Reset System Management Controller (SMC)

SMC controls USB power delivery — resetting can fix detection:

MacBook with Apple Silicon: Restart (SMC resets automatically)

MacBook with T2 chip:

  1. Shut down
  2. Hold Control + Option (left) + Shift (right) for 7 seconds
  3. Keep holding, also press Power for another 7 seconds
  4. Release all, wait 5 seconds, then start normally

7 Try on Another Computer

Test if it's the drive or your Mac:

  • Connect the drive to another Mac or PC
  • If it shows up there — your Mac's port or settings are the issue
  • If it doesn't show up anywhere — the drive itself is failing
