Auto-Hide Dock (Best Productivity)

Cmd + Option + D toggles Dock auto-hide.

Or: System Preferences → Dock & Menu Bar → Automatically hide and show the Dock → ON.

Speed Up Dock Animation

Terminal: defaults write com.apple.dock autohide-time-modifier -float 0.15; killall Dock

Makes Dock appear/disappear ~50% faster.

Adjust Dock Position

System Preferences → Dock & Menu Bar → Position on screen.

Bottom (default): worst on widescreen monitors.

Left or Right: better for ultra-wide. More vertical space.

Magnification

System Preferences → Dock → Magnification → ON.

Hovered icon zooms larger. Visual feedback for which app.

Adjust size slider to taste.

Add App Folders

Drag folder to Dock right side (between apps + Trash).

Click folder → fan or grid view of contents.

Customize Folder Display

Right-click folder in Dock:

  • View as: Folder / Stack
  • Display as: Fan / Grid / List
  • Sort by: Name / Date / Type / Size

Recent Apps Section

Dock shows 3 most recently-used apps you don't have permanently in Dock.

System Preferences → Dock → 'Show recent applications in Dock' → ON.

Toggle off if you don't want this section.

Drag Apps to Reorganize

Click + drag app icons to rearrange.

Drag app off Dock to remove (or right-click → Options → Remove from Dock).

Drag app from Applications folder to Dock to add.

Right-Click Magic on Apps

  • Right-click app: Show All Windows / Hide / Quit
  • Right-click + hold: switch between apps via gestures
  • Right-click while app open: 'Keep in Dock' / 'Open at Login'

Mission Control + Dock

3-finger swipe up on trackpad = Mission Control (sees all open windows).

App in Dock with multiple windows shows badge.

Dock Sizing

System Preferences → Dock → Size slider.

Default 60. Smaller (30) for less screen use. Larger (80+) for accessibility.

Mac App Switcher (Cmd+Tab)

Cmd+Tab cycles through open apps. Hold Cmd, Tab repeatedly.

Hold Cmd+Tab + Q = quit app.

Power user: Cmd+` cycles through windows of current app.

Spotlight (Quick Launch)

Cmd + Space. Type app name → enter to launch.

Faster than mousing to Dock for less-used apps.

  • Dock: 5-15 most-used apps + folders
  • Launchpad: all apps in iPhone-grid view
  • Cmd+Space: any app by typing
