Fixes to Try

1 Check Apple's System Status

App Store outages do happen:

  1. Visit apple.com/support/systemstatus
  2. Check if the Mac App Store shows any issues
  3. If there's an outage, wait and try again later

2 Sign Out and Back In

Refresh your Apple ID session:

  1. Open App Store โ†’ Store menu โ†’ Sign Out
  2. Wait 30 seconds
  3. Sign back in with your Apple ID
  4. Try downloading or updating again

3 Clear App Store Cache

Corrupted cache is the most common cause:

  1. Quit the App Store completely (Command + Q)
  2. Open Finder โ†’ Go โ†’ Go to Folder (Cmd+Shift+G)
  3. Navigate to: ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore
  4. Delete all files inside this folder (not the folder itself)
  5. Also clear: ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.commerce
  6. Reopen App Store and test

4 Fix Stuck Downloads

For apps stuck on "Waiting" or partially downloaded:

  1. In App Store, find the stuck download
  2. Click the X to cancel it
  3. Wait 30 seconds
  4. Click the download button again
  5. If still stuck, restart your Mac and try again

5 Check Date and Time Settings

Incorrect date/time breaks SSL certificates:

  1. Go to System Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Date & Time
  2. Enable "Set time and date automatically"
  3. Make sure the correct time zone is selected
  4. Reopen App Store

6 Check Network and DNS

Custom DNS can block App Store:

  1. Go to System Settings โ†’ Network โ†’ Wi-Fi โ†’ Details โ†’ DNS
  2. If you have custom DNS servers (like 1.1.1.1), try removing them temporarily
  3. Try a different network (e.g., hotspot from your phone)
  4. If App Store works on a different network, the issue is your router or DNS

7 Update macOS

  1. Go to System Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Software Update
  2. Install any available updates
  3. App Store and system updates sometimes fix each other

8 Restart Mac and Reset NVRAM

For persistent App Store issues:

  1. Restart your Mac: Apple menu โ†’ Restart
  2. For Intel Macs: hold Option + Command + P + R during startup for 20 seconds
  3. This resets stored preferences that can interfere with App Store

Still Having Issues?

Persistent App Store failures may indicate a corrupted macOS installation. A macOS reinstall (which keeps your data) can fix deep system issues.
