iPhone 15 Not Turning On
iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, or 15 Pro Max won't power on? Black screen, no response? Work through these fixes before heading to the repair shop โ most cases are software, a dead battery, or a hung boot process.

๐ Step 1: Identify the Symptom
- Black screen, totally unresponsive: Dead battery or frozen boot โ start with charging
- Screen flickers on briefly then goes black: Software crash or battery failing to hold charge under load
- Apple logo loops / appears and disappears: Boot loop โ use Recovery Mode
- Red battery icon appears when charging: Battery was depleted โ give it 15+ minutes before attempting power on
- Vibrates but screen stays black: Display issue โ screen may be damaged or disconnected
๐ Step 2: Charge โ The Most Common Fix
The iPhone 15 uses USB-C for the first time. Charging issues are slightly more common as users transition from Lightning accessories:
- Use an Apple-branded or MFi-certified USB-C cable โ third-party cables vary widely in quality
- Use a 20W or higher USB-C power adapter for fastest reliable charging
- Plug into a wall outlet directly โ not a hub, laptop, or car charger for diagnosis
- Wait 15-30 minutes โ a deeply depleted iPhone 15 shows the red battery icon for several minutes before responding
- Clean the USB-C port if needed โ lint and debris compact easily in the smaller USB-C opening
๐ Step 3: Force Restart
A software freeze can make the iPhone 15 appear completely dead. Force restart clears it without losing data:
- Quickly press and release Volume Up
- Quickly press and release Volume Down
- Press and hold the Side button for about 10 seconds
- Keep holding even if the power slider appears โ hold until the Apple logo shows
- Release and let it boot
This works even if the screen is totally black and unresponsive. The phone processes the button sequence whether or not the display is functioning.
๐ก๏ธ Step 4: Temperature Check
iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max run hotter than standard models due to the A17 Pro chip. iPhones automatically shut down when too hot or too cold:
- Too hot: iPhone shuts down and won't restart until cooled. Remove from case, place in a cool room (not the freezer), wait 15-20 minutes
- Too cold: Below freezing (0ยฐC/32ยฐF), lithium batteries can't deliver enough power โ bring inside and warm to room temperature
If the phone was left in a hot car or direct sunlight, thermal shutdown is the most likely cause.
๐ป Step 5: Recovery Mode via Computer
If the iPhone 15 is stuck in a boot loop or won't respond to force restart, Recovery Mode via a Mac or PC can repair or reinstall iOS:
- Connect iPhone 15 to a Mac or PC using a USB-C cable
- Open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows)
- With the phone connected, perform a force restart: Volume Up โ Volume Down โ hold Side button
- This time, keep holding the Side button even after the Apple logo โ keep holding until you see the Recovery Mode screen (cable + laptop icon)
- In Finder/iTunes, choose Update first โ this reinstalls iOS without erasing data
- If Update fails, choose Restore โ this erases and reinstalls (restore from backup after)
๐ง Step 6: DFU Mode (Last Resort)
Device Firmware Update (DFU) mode is the deepest restore โ it reinstalls both iOS and the bootloader. Use only if Recovery Mode didn't work:
- Connect to computer with Finder/iTunes open
- Press Volume Up โ release. Press Volume Down โ release. Press and hold Side button for 3 seconds
- While still holding Side, also hold Volume Down for 5 seconds
- Release Side button but keep holding Volume Down for another 5 seconds
- Screen stays black โ if Finder/iTunes shows "iPhone in recovery mode," DFU mode is active
- Click Restore in Finder/iTunes
DFU restore erases the iPhone. Restore from iCloud or iTunes backup afterward.
๐ Hardware Failures
If none of the above work, it's likely hardware:
- iPhone 15 under Apple warranty (1 year): Apple replaces at no charge
- AppleCare+: Covers accidental damage with a fee
- Out of warranty: Apple authorized repair or trusted third-party shop
- Drop damage: Internal flex cables or logic board damage โ needs professional diagnosis
