iPhone 14 Not Charging

🔍 Step 1: Identify the Symptom

• No charging indicator at all: Cable, adapter, or completely dead battery
• "This accessory may not be supported": Non-MFi cable — swap immediately
• Charges to 80% then stops: Optimized Battery Charging holding — not a malfunction
• Charges very slowly: Low-wattage adapter, or background app draining faster than charging
• Charging stops and starts repeatedly: Dirty or damaged Lightning port, or loose cable
• MagSafe charging erratically: Case too thick, misaligned magnet, or foreign material on back glass

🔌 Step 2: Test Cable and Adapter First

The fastest way to diagnose: rule out the cable and adapter before assuming the phone has a problem.

1. Try a different Lightning cable — cables fail internally without any visible damage
2. Try a different USB power adapter — the iPhone 14 supports fast charging at 20W; use at least a 12W adapter for reliable charging
3. Try a different wall outlet — test the outlet with another device
4. Plug directly into a wall adapter — not a laptop, USB hub, or car charger for diagnosis
5. Make sure cable is MFi certified — third-party non-certified cables commonly cause slow or intermittent charging

🧹 Step 3: Clean the Lightning Port

Lint from pockets compacts into the Lightning port over time — especially on 2+ year old iPhones. A clogged port prevents the connector from making proper contact:

1. Power off the iPhone 14 before cleaning
2. Use a wooden or plastic toothpick — never metal (can damage pins)
3. Shine a light into the port — you'll often see a plug of compressed lint
4. Gently scrape along the bottom of the port, working debris toward the opening
5. Follow with a short burst of compressed air to clear loose debris
6. Plug in the Lightning cable — it should now click in firmly

If the cable clicks in more securely than before, lint was the entire problem.

⚙️ Step 4: Optimized Battery Charging & Clean Energy Charging

Two iOS features can make the iPhone 14 appear to stop charging at 80% — both are by design, not a defect:

1. Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging
2. Review Optimized Battery Charging — learns your schedule and holds at 80% overnight, completing just before your typical wake time. Disable temporarily if you need 100% now
3. Review Clean Energy Charging (US only) — delays charging when grid energy is less clean. Disable if you need to charge immediately regardless of grid status

If you're at 80% and plugged in overnight, this is almost certainly the reason — it's Apple protecting your battery, not a malfunction.

💧 Step 5: Moisture Detection

iPhone 14 detects liquid in the Lightning port and blocks charging to prevent corrosion damage. If you see a moisture alert:

• Tap the port gently on your palm several times to dislodge any water
• Leave in a dry, well-ventilated area for at least 30 minutes — face down on a dry cloth
• Do not use a hair dryer or compressed hot air — can damage internal components
• Do not put in rice — it doesn't absorb moisture effectively and introduces starch residue
• Emergency override: the moisture alert has an option to charge anyway — use only if absolutely necessary

🔄 Step 6: Force Restart

A software crash can freeze the charging subsystem — the phone won't respond to a charger despite being physically fine:

1. Quickly press and release Volume Up
2. Quickly press and release Volume Down
3. Press and hold the Side button until Apple logo appears (~10 seconds)
4. Plug in charger after boot — charging indicator should appear

📲 Step 7: Update iOS

Settings → General → Software Update. Charging firmware bugs — including MagSafe and USB-PD delivery issues — are regularly fixed in iOS point releases. Don't run an outdated iOS version if charging is misbehaving.

🔋 Step 8: Battery Health

At 2+ years old, check: Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging → Maximum Capacity.

• Above 85%: Battery is healthy — software fixes should resolve the issue
• 80-85%: Noticeable wear — replacement recommended if slow charging bothers you
• Service Recommended: Battery replacement will solve both capacity and charging behavior
