iPhone 12 Not Charging

iPhone 12 won't charge, charges intermittently, or only reaches 80%? The iPhone 12 was the first iPhone with MagSafe โ€” introducing new charging quirks alongside the familiar Lightning issues. Here's how to fix all of them.

๐Ÿ” Step 1: Identify the Symptom

  • No charging at all (no indicator): Cable, adapter, port issue, or deeply depleted battery
  • Charging stops at 80%: Optimized Battery Charging โ€” by design, not a defect
  • MagSafe clicking on/off repeatedly: Metal card/object in case blocking magnet, or case too thick
  • Wired charges fine, MagSafe doesn't (or vice versa): Isolates the issue to one charging method
  • "This accessory may not be supported": Non-MFi Lightning cable โ€” replace immediately
  • Very hot while charging: Thermal protection โ€” stop, cool down, resume

๐Ÿ”Œ Step 2: Test Cable and Adapter

  1. Try a different Lightning cable โ€” cables fail invisibly at the connector ends
  2. Try a different power adapter โ€” the iPhone 12 supports fast charging with a 20W USB-C PD adapter; use at minimum a 12W adapter
  3. Try a different outlet
  4. Plug directly into wall โ€” not a USB hub, laptop, or car charger for diagnosis
  5. Confirm cable is MFi certified โ€” counterfeit cables cause "not supported" errors and erratic charging

๐Ÿงฒ Step 3: MagSafe Troubleshooting

The iPhone 12 introduced MagSafe โ€” its magnetic wireless charging creates unique issues:

  • Cards or metal in your case: Credit cards, ID cards, or metal plates block the magnetic connection and interrupt charging. Remove case and test MagSafe directly on the phone back
  • Thick third-party cases: MagSafe works best with Apple MagSafe cases or certified thin cases โ€” thick cases reduce induction efficiency
  • Alignment: The MagSafe puck snaps magnetically to center โ€” if it snaps but doesn't charge, clean the back of the phone and the charging face of the puck with a dry cloth
  • iPhone getting very hot via MagSafe: Normal to get warm, but excessive heat triggers thermal limiting โ€” charge in a cooler environment

๐Ÿงน Step 4: Clean the Lightning Port

At 4+ years old, the iPhone 12 Lightning port is a prime candidate for lint compaction:

  1. Power off the phone
  2. Use a wooden or plastic toothpick โ€” never metal
  3. Shine a flashlight into the port โ€” look for grey compressed lint at the back
  4. Gently scrape lint toward the opening and remove it
  5. Follow with a short burst of compressed air
  6. Try the cable again โ€” if it now clicks in more firmly, lint was the problem

โš™๏ธ Step 5: Optimized Battery Charging

Stopping at 80% is intentional โ€” not a bug:

  1. Settings โ†’ Battery โ†’ Battery Health & Charging
  2. Temporarily disable Optimized Battery Charging if you need 100% right now
  3. iOS learns your schedule and only completes to 100% when it predicts you'll need it soon

๐Ÿ”„ Step 6: Force Restart

  1. Quickly press and release Volume Up
  2. Quickly press and release Volume Down
  3. Press and hold Side button until Apple logo (~10 seconds)
  4. Plug in charger after boot

๐Ÿ”‹ Step 7: Battery Health

At 4+ years old, the iPhone 12 battery has likely accumulated 600+ charge cycles:

  • Settings โ†’ Battery โ†’ Battery Health & Charging โ†’ Maximum Capacity
  • Above 85%: Battery healthy โ€” software fixes will help
  • 80-85%: Meaningful wear โ€” replacement worth considering
  • Under 80% or Service Recommended: Replace battery โ€” it's affecting both runtime and charging behavior

iPhone 12 battery replacement: ~$89 at Apple, $60-70 at quality third-party shop. Still a capable phone in 2026 with a fresh battery.
