iPhone 11 Not Charging

iPhone 11 won't charge, charges intermittently, or shows "This accessory may not be supported"? At 5+ years old, the iPhone 11 is a prime candidate for lint-packed Lightning ports and worn batteries that affect charging behavior. Here's the full fix guide.

๐Ÿ” Step 1: Identify the Symptom

  • No charging indicator when plugged in: Cable/adapter failure, lint-packed port, or deeply depleted battery
  • "This accessory may not be supported": Non-MFi (counterfeit or low-quality) Lightning cable โ€” replace immediately
  • Charges only at certain angles: Lint at the back of the Lightning port preventing full pin contact
  • Charges slowly: Using a 5W cube โ€” iPhone 11 supports fast charging with 18W+ USB-C PD adapter
  • Charges fine with one cable but not another: Cable issue โ€” cables fail internally at both ends without visible damage
  • Charges, then stops, then charges again: Intermittent connection โ€” almost always lint or a damaged cable end

๐Ÿงน Step 2: Clean the Lightning Port (Most Common Fix)

The iPhone 11 Lightning port is at minimum 5 years old in 2026. Pocket lint compresses into a dense mat at the back of the port that blocks the cable pins from making contact:

  1. Power off the phone completely
  2. Get a wooden or plastic toothpick โ€” never metal, never a needle
  3. Shine a flashlight directly into the port โ€” look for grey or brown compressed material at the very back
  4. Insert the toothpick and gently scrape the lint toward the opening, then remove it
  5. Give a short burst of compressed air to clear any remaining debris
  6. Plug the cable back in โ€” it should click in more firmly than before if lint was the issue

This single fix resolves 60-70% of iPhone 11 charging problems. If your phone is 4+ years old and never had the port cleaned, start here.

๐Ÿ”Œ Step 3: Test Cable and Adapter

  1. Try a different Lightning cable โ€” cables fail most often at the connector end with no visible damage
  2. Verify the cable is MFi certified โ€” look for "Made for iPhone" labeling. Counterfeit cables cause the "not supported" error and erratic charging
  3. Try a different adapter โ€” old 5W iPhone cubes sometimes fail
  4. Plug directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip, USB hub, or laptop port
  5. Try a different outlet to rule out the circuit

โšก Step 4: Fast Charging

iPhone 11 supports fast charging but Apple didn't include a fast charger in the box. If you're using the old 5W cube, you're charging at a fraction of the possible speed:

  • Use an 18W or 20W USB-C PD adapter with a USB-C to Lightning cable
  • Fast charging takes iPhone 11 from 0 to 50% in about 30 minutes
  • Standard 5W charging: roughly 3 hours for a full charge

๐Ÿ”„ Step 5: Force Restart

  1. Quickly press and release Volume Up
  2. Quickly press and release Volume Down
  3. Press and hold Side button until Apple logo appears (~10 seconds)
  4. Once booted, plug in the charger and check for the charging indicator

A software crash can leave the charging subsystem stuck. Force restart clears it without data loss.

๐Ÿ”‹ Step 6: Battery Health โ€” Critical at 5+ Years

iPhone 11 launched September 2019. By 2026 it's been through potentially 1,500+ charge cycles โ€” well beyond the 500-cycle rating:

  1. Settings โ†’ Battery โ†’ Battery Health & Charging โ†’ Maximum Capacity
  2. Above 80%: Battery is acceptable โ€” software fixes should help
  3. 70-80%: Noticeably reduced capacity โ€” replacement strongly recommended
  4. Under 70% or "Service Recommended": Replace battery immediately โ€” the degraded battery may also be causing irregular charging behavior as the charging controller struggles to manage it

iPhone 11 battery replacement: ~$69 at Apple, $50-60 at quality third-party. The A13 Bionic chip in the iPhone 11 still runs iOS 18 well โ€” a battery replacement can give this phone 2-3 more years of useful life.

๐Ÿ“ฒ Step 7: iOS Update

Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Software Update. Charging management bugs are patched in iOS updates. iPhone 11 supports iOS 18 โ€” keep it current.
