iPhone XS Not Charging

iPhone XS and XS Max (September 2018) are now 7+ years old โ€” making lint-packed Lightning ports and severely degraded batteries the primary charging culprits. Here's every fix, from free DIY to knowing when to call it.

โฑ๏ธ 5-20 minutes ๐Ÿ’ช Easy ๐Ÿ’ฐ Free

๐Ÿ” Step 1: Identify the Symptom

  • No charging screen when plugged in: Cable, adapter, port, or dead battery
  • "This accessory may not be supported": Non-MFi Lightning cable โ€” replace with MFi-certified
  • Charges at certain angles only: Lint blocking pins โ€” clean the port
  • Intermittent charging (starts/stops): Damaged cable end or lint in port
  • Very slow charging: Using the old 5W cube โ€” the XS supports fast charging with 18W+ USB-C PD
  • Charges wired but not wireless: MagSafe doesn't apply to XS โ€” but Qi wireless charging is supported. Wireless issues point to coil debris or software

๐Ÿงน Step 2: Clean the Lightning Port

At 7+ years old, the iPhone XS Lightning port has had thousands of plug/unplug cycles and years of pocket lint accumulation. This is the most common fix:

  1. Power off the iPhone XS / XS Max completely
  2. Use a wooden or plastic toothpick โ€” never metal
  3. Shine a flashlight into the port โ€” look for compressed grey or dark lint at the back of the port
  4. Gently scrape the lint toward the opening and remove it
  5. Follow with a short burst of compressed air
  6. Plug the cable back in โ€” a clean port lets the cable seat fully and click firmly

This resolves the majority of XS charging complaints. At 7 years, almost every iPhone XS has lint in the port.

๐Ÿ”Œ Step 3: Test Cable and Adapter

  1. Try a different Lightning cable โ€” cables fail silently at the connector end
  2. Confirm the cable is MFi certified โ€” look for "Made for iPhone/iPad" labeling. Counterfeit cables cause "not supported" errors
  3. Try a different power adapter
  4. Test with a different wall outlet
  5. Plug directly into wall โ€” skip USB hubs, laptops, and power strips for diagnosis

โšก Step 4: Fast Charging

iPhone XS was Apple's first iPhone to officially support fast charging โ€” but they shipped it with a 5W cube anyway:

  • Use an 18W or 20W USB-C PD adapter with a USB-C to Lightning cable
  • Fast charge: 0 to 50% in ~30 minutes
  • Stock 5W cube: ~3 hours for full charge

๐Ÿ”„ Step 5: Force Restart

  1. Quickly press and release Volume Up
  2. Quickly press and release Volume Down
  3. Press and hold the Side button until Apple logo appears (~10 seconds)
  4. After reboot, plug in charger and check for charging bolt in battery icon

๐Ÿ”‹ Step 6: Battery Health โ€” 7+ Years of Wear

iPhone XS launched September 2018. By 2026, the battery has likely seen 1,500-2,000+ charge cycles โ€” far beyond the rated 500. Severe degradation causes irregular charging behavior:

  1. Settings โ†’ Battery โ†’ Battery Health & Charging โ†’ Maximum Capacity
  2. Above 80%: Battery healthy โ€” software fixes will help
  3. 65-80%: Major wear โ€” charging is erratic, runtime is severely reduced. Replacement strongly recommended
  4. Below 65%: Replace battery โ€” the degraded cells may be actively causing charging failures as the charging IC struggles to manage them

iPhone XS battery replacement: ~$69 at Apple, $55-65 at quality third-party. The A12 Bionic chip still handles iOS 17 โ€” a fresh battery can extend useful life 2+ years.

๐ŸŒ Step 7: Wireless (Qi) Charging Check

iPhone XS supports Qi wireless charging. If wired fails but wireless works (or vice versa):

  • Wired works, wireless doesn't: Check Qi pad alignment, remove thick case, clean watch back
  • Wireless works, wired doesn't: Lightning port or cable issue โ€” focus on port cleaning and cable replacement
