iPhone XR Not Charging

🔍 Step 1: Identify the Symptom

• No charging indicator when plugged in: Cable, adapter, lint-packed port, or deeply depleted battery
• "This accessory may not be supported": Non-MFi (counterfeit) Lightning cable — replace immediately
• Charges only when held at an angle: Lint preventing full pin contact — clean the port
• Charges, stops, charges, stops: Intermittent connection — lint or a damaged cable end
• Very slow charging: Using the 5W cube that came in the box — upgrade to 18W+ fast charger

🧹 Step 2: Clean the Lightning Port (Most Common Fix)

At 7+ years old, the iPhone XR Lightning port has almost certainly accumulated compressed lint from pockets and bags. This is the most common cause of XR charging failures:

1. Power off the iPhone XR completely
2. Get a wooden or plastic toothpick — never metal, never a pin or paperclip
3. Shine a flashlight directly into the port — look for grey or dark compressed material at the back
4. Gently insert the toothpick and scrape the lint toward the opening, then remove
5. Follow with a short burst of compressed air to clear residue
6. Plug the cable in — it should now click in more firmly and sit flush

This fixes 60-70% of iPhone XR charging problems. If your XR is 3+ years old and has never had the port cleaned, start here before anything else.

🔌 Step 3: Test Cable and Adapter

1. Try a completely different Lightning cable — cables fail silently at the connector end with no visible damage
2. Confirm the cable is MFi certified (Made for iPhone) — counterfeit cables trigger the "not supported" error
3. Try a different power adapter — old 5W cubes can fail
4. Test with a different wall outlet to rule out the circuit
5. Plug directly into the wall — skip USB hubs and laptop ports for diagnosis

⚡ Step 4: Fast Charging the XR

Apple shipped the XR with a 5W charger — one of the worst value decisions of that era. The XR supports fast charging but you need the right equipment:

• Use an 18W or 20W USB-C PD adapter with a USB-C to Lightning cable
• Fast charge takes 0 to 50% in about 30 minutes
• The stock 5W cube takes 3+ hours for a full charge

🔄 Step 5: Force Restart

1. Quickly press and release Volume Up
2. Quickly press and release Volume Down
3. Press and hold the Side button until Apple logo appears (~10 seconds)
4. After boot, plug in charger and verify the charging bolt icon appears

🔋 Step 6: Battery Health — Critical at 7+ Years

iPhone XR launched October 2018. At 7+ years old, it's been through potentially 2,000+ charge cycles — far beyond the rated 500. Severe degradation affects not just runtime but charging behavior:

1. Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging → Maximum Capacity
2. 70-80%: Significant wear — replacement strongly recommended, charging behavior will be erratic
3. Under 70% or "Service Recommended": Replace battery immediately — the degraded cells are likely causing the charging irregularities

iPhone XR battery replacement: ~$69 at Apple, $50-60 at quality third-party shop. The A12 Bionic chip still handles iOS 18 reasonably well — a battery replacement can extend life 2-3 more years.

📲 Step 7: iOS Update

Settings → General → Software Update. iPhone XR supports iOS 18 — keep it updated. Charging bugs and power management issues are patched in regular updates.
