Fix 1: Charge It for 30 Minutes (Seriously)
The most common reason an iPhone won't turn on is a completely dead battery. When the battery drops to 0%, the phone won't respond to any button press — not even the charging screen shows up immediately.
- Plug your iPhone into a wall charger (not a computer USB port — it's too slow)
- Use a cable you know works, or try a different cable and adapter
- Wait at least 30 minutes without touching the phone
- After 30 minutes, you should see a charging screen (battery icon) or the Apple logo
No response after 30 minutes? Try a different cable, charger, and outlet. If still nothing, move to Fix 2.
Fix 2: Force Restart
If the battery has charge but the screen is black or frozen, a force restart can break the loop.
All iPhones from iPhone 8 onward (including SE 2/3/4, X, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16):
- Press and quickly release Volume Up
- Press and quickly release Volume Down
- Press and hold the Side button for 10+ seconds until the Apple logo appears
The timing matters — do the volume buttons in quick succession, then immediately hold the side button. Don't let go when you see the power-off slider.

π§ Diagnose & Fix Won't-Turn-On: Step by Step
Step 1: Charge for 30+ Minutes
If the battery is fully dead, the device shows nothing on screen even when plugged in for the first few minutes. Connect to a known-good charger and wait 30 minutes minimum before assuming it's broken.
Step 2: Force Restart (the most common fix)
Force restart bypasses any frozen software state:
- iPhone 8 and later: Press Vol Up β Vol Down β hold Side button until Apple logo (about 10 seconds)
- iPhone 7: Hold Side + Vol Down until Apple logo
- iPhone 6s and earlier: Hold Home + Side until Apple logo
- iPad with no Home button: Same as iPhone 8+
- iPad with Home button: Hold Top + Home until Apple logo
Step 3: Try a Different Cable + Adapter + Outlet
Often the device IS charging but the indicator doesn't show due to a bad cable. Try at least 2 different cables and 2 different power sources.
Step 4: Inspect the Charging Port
Lint can completely block charging. With a flashlight, look for compacted gray fuzz at the back of the port. Use a plastic pick (never metal) to clear it.
Step 5: Recovery Mode Restore
If force restart doesn't bring it back: connect to a Mac/PC, open Finder (or iTunes on PC), put the device in Recovery Mode, and click Update (NOT Restore β Update preserves your data).
- iPhone 8+: connect to computer, press Vol Up + Vol Down + hold Side until Recovery Mode screen
- iPad without Home: same as iPhone 8+
- iPad with Home: hold Top + Home until Recovery Mode screen
Step 6: Check for Liquid Damage
Look at the SIM tray slot β there's a small white strip inside. If it's red/pink, the device has been wet. Even drops of moisture can prevent boot. Place in silica gel for 24+ hours, do NOT power on, and try again.
β οΈ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming it's broken after only 5 minutes of charging
- Skipping force restart and going straight to Apple
- Using random USB cables (counterfeit ones don't deliver enough power)
- Powering on after liquid exposure (causes corrosion)
π₯ When to Call a Pro
If the device shows no signs of life after force restart + recovery-mode restore + clean port + 1 hour charge, you have a hardware issue. Apple diagnoses for free at the Genius Bar. Logic board issues run $300β$700 to fix; sometimes replacement is cheaper than repair.
Fix 3: Check for Physical / Water Damage
Inspect your iPhone for clues:
- SIM tray liquid indicator: Eject the SIM tray and look inside the slot. A red or pink dot means water got in. iPhones have a white indicator that turns red on contact with liquid.
- Charging port debris: Use a wooden toothpick or plastic pick to gently clean lint, pocket dust, or corrosion from the USB-C / Lightning port. Compressed air works too.
- Swollen battery: If the screen or back glass is bulging, the battery has expanded. Do not charge it. Take it to a repair shop immediately.
- Cracked screen: A severely cracked display can sever the ribbon cable, making the screen appear dead even though the phone is running.
Fix 4: Try a Different Charger and Cable
Faulty cables are incredibly common. Even cables that look fine can have broken internal wires.
- Use an Apple-branded or MFi-certified cable
- Try a different power adapter (at least 5W; 20W USB-C is ideal)
- Try a wireless MagSafe charger if available — this bypasses the port entirely
- If the phone charges wirelessly but not via cable, the charging port needs repair
Fix 5: Enter DFU Mode and Restore
DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is the deepest restore option. It reinstalls both the firmware and iOS from scratch. This will erase all data on the phone.
How to enter DFU mode (iPhone 8 and later):
- Connect the iPhone to a Mac or PC. Open Finder (macOS Catalina+) or iTunes (Windows/older Mac)
- Press and quickly release Volume Up
- Press and quickly release Volume Down
- Press and hold Side button for 10 seconds
- While still holding Side, also press and hold Volume Down for 5 seconds
- Release the Side button but keep holding Volume Down for 10 more seconds
- The screen should stay completely black. Finder/iTunes will say it detected a device in recovery mode
- Click Restore iPhone
If the Apple logo appears, you held the Side button too long — start over.
Fix 6: Recovery Mode Restore (Less Extreme Than DFU)
If DFU mode feels too advanced, Recovery Mode is the standard way to restore via a computer.
- Connect the iPhone to your computer
- Quickly press Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the Side button
- Keep holding until you see the Recovery Mode screen (a cable pointing to a computer icon)
- Finder/iTunes will offer to Update or Restore — try Update first (preserves data)
- If Update fails, choose Restore
Fix 7: Wait for the Battery to Warm Up
Lithium-ion batteries shut down in extreme cold. If your iPhone was left in a car during winter or exposed to temperatures below 32°F (0°C), bring it to room temperature and wait 15–20 minutes before attempting to charge or turn it on.
Fix 8: Hardware Repair
If none of the above fixes work, the problem is almost certainly hardware:
- Dead battery — batteries degrade over time. An iPhone battery below 80% health can die unexpectedly or refuse to charge.
- Damaged charging port — corroded or bent pins prevent power delivery.
- Logic board failure — the rarest and most expensive issue. Can result from water damage, drops, or failed updates.
- Faulty display — the phone may actually be on, but the screen is disconnected or broken internally.
