iPhone Voicemail Not Working - Fix Guide
Voicemail not showing up? Can't record a greeting? Visual voicemail broken? Here's how to fix all iPhone voicemail issues.
🔍 Quick Diagnosis
- "Call Voicemail" instead of visual list: Visual voicemail not set up
- No voicemail notifications: Settings or carrier issue
- Can't record greeting: Network or setup issue
- "Voicemail Unavailable": Carrier or network problem
- Voicemails not downloading: Cellular data issue
📱 Step 1: Set Up Voicemail
If you've never set up voicemail or switched carriers:
- Open the Phone app
- Tap Voicemail tab at bottom right
- Tap Set Up Now
- Create a voicemail password (write it down!)
- Choose Default or Custom greeting
- Record your greeting if custom
🔧 Fix #1: Check Cellular Connection
Voicemail requires cellular connection:
- Make sure you have cellular signal (bars showing)
- Turn off WiFi temporarily to test
- Toggle Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds, then off
- Try making a phone call to test cellular
🔧 Fix #2: Enable Cellular Data for Voicemail
- Go to Settings → Cellular
- Scroll down to app list
- Make sure Phone has cellular data enabled
- Also check that Cellular Data is ON at the top
🔧 Fix #3: Reset Network Settings
This often fixes voicemail issues:
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
- Tap Reset → Reset Network Settings
- Enter your passcode
- Confirm reset
- Reconnect to WiFi after restart
- Test voicemail
Note: This erases WiFi passwords but often fixes voicemail!
🔧 Fix #4: Update Carrier Settings
- Go to Settings → General → About
- Wait 30 seconds on this screen
- If a popup appears asking to update carrier settings, tap Update
- Restart your iPhone
🔧 Fix #5: Re-record Voicemail Greeting
If your greeting isn't working:
- Open Phone → Voicemail
- Tap Greeting in top left
- Select Custom
- Tap Record
- Record your greeting
- Tap Stop then Save
📞 Fix #6: Call Your Voicemail Directly
Test if voicemail works by calling it:
- Open Phone app
- Press and hold 1 on the keypad
- This dials voicemail directly
- If it works here, the issue is with visual voicemail display
🔧 Fix #7: Restart Your iPhone
- Press and hold Side button + Volume button
- Slide to power off
- Wait 30 seconds
- Turn iPhone back on
- Test voicemail
🔧 Fix #8: Check Do Not Disturb / Focus
Make sure calls can come through:
- Go to Settings → Focus
- Check if a Focus mode is active
- Make sure calls are allowed in your active Focus
- Or disable Focus temporarily to test
📱 Fix #9: Remove and Re-add SIM/eSIM
- Physical SIM: Eject SIM, wait 30 seconds, reinsert
- eSIM: Go to Settings → Cellular → tap your plan → Remove eSIM, then re-add
- Restart iPhone
- Set up voicemail again
📞 Contact Your Carrier
If nothing works, call your carrier:
- Verizon: 1-800-922-0204
- AT&T: 1-800-331-0500
- T-Mobile: 1-800-937-8997
- Sprint: 1-888-211-4727
Ask them to:
- Reset your voicemail box on their end
- Verify visual voicemail is enabled on your account
- Check for carrier outages
