🔍 Quick Diagnosis

  • "Call Voicemail" instead of visual list: Visual voicemail not set up
  • No voicemail notifications: Settings or carrier issue
  • Can't record greeting: Network or setup issue
  • "Voicemail Unavailable": Carrier or network problem
  • Voicemails not downloading: Cellular data issue

📱 Step 1: Set Up Voicemail

If you've never set up voicemail or switched carriers:

  1. Open the Phone app
  2. Tap Voicemail tab at bottom right
  3. Tap Set Up Now
  4. Create a voicemail password (write it down!)
  5. Choose Default or Custom greeting
  6. Record your greeting if custom

🔧 Fix #1: Check Cellular Connection

Voicemail requires cellular connection:

  1. Make sure you have cellular signal (bars showing)
  2. Turn off WiFi temporarily to test
  3. Toggle Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds, then off
  4. Try making a phone call to test cellular

🔧 Fix #2: Enable Cellular Data for Voicemail

  1. Go to Settings → Cellular
  2. Scroll down to app list
  3. Make sure Phone has cellular data enabled
  4. Also check that Cellular Data is ON at the top

🔧 Fix #3: Reset Network Settings

This often fixes voicemail issues:

  1. Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
  2. Tap Reset → Reset Network Settings
  3. Enter your passcode
  4. Confirm reset
  5. Reconnect to WiFi after restart
  6. Test voicemail

Note: This erases WiFi passwords but often fixes voicemail!

🔧 Fix #4: Update Carrier Settings

  1. Go to Settings → General → About
  2. Wait 30 seconds on this screen
  3. If a popup appears asking to update carrier settings, tap Update
  4. Restart your iPhone

🔧 Fix #5: Re-record Voicemail Greeting

If your greeting isn't working:

  1. Open Phone → Voicemail
  2. Tap Greeting in top left
  3. Select Custom
  4. Tap Record
  5. Record your greeting
  6. Tap Stop then Save

📞 Fix #6: Call Your Voicemail Directly

Test if voicemail works by calling it:

  1. Open Phone app
  2. Press and hold 1 on the keypad
  3. This dials voicemail directly
  4. If it works here, the issue is with visual voicemail display

🔧 Fix #7: Restart Your iPhone

  1. Press and hold Side button + Volume button
  2. Slide to power off
  3. Wait 30 seconds
  4. Turn iPhone back on
  5. Test voicemail

🔧 Fix #8: Check Do Not Disturb / Focus

Make sure calls can come through:

  1. Go to Settings → Focus
  2. Check if a Focus mode is active
  3. Make sure calls are allowed in your active Focus
  4. Or disable Focus temporarily to test

📱 Fix #9: Remove and Re-add SIM/eSIM

  1. Physical SIM: Eject SIM, wait 30 seconds, reinsert
  2. eSIM: Go to Settings → Cellular → tap your plan → Remove eSIM, then re-add
  3. Restart iPhone
  4. Set up voicemail again

📞 Contact Your Carrier

If nothing works, call your carrier:

  • Verizon: 1-800-922-0204
  • AT&T: 1-800-331-0500
  • T-Mobile: 1-800-937-8997
  • Sprint: 1-888-211-4727

Ask them to:

  • Reset your voicemail box on their end
  • Verify visual voicemail is enabled on your account
  • Check for carrier outages

⚠️ Still Having Issues?

  • New phone number: May take 24 hours for voicemail to activate
  • Switched carriers: Need to set up voicemail fresh
