iPhone Touchscreen Not Responding? Emergency Fixes
A completely unresponsive touchscreen turns your iPhone into an expensive paperweight. Whether the screen is frozen, has dead zones, or registers phantom touches, these fixes go from quickest to most thorough. The first one works even when you can't interact with the screen at all.

Fix 1: Force Restart Your iPhone
This is your emergency lifeline β it uses physical buttons, no screen touch needed.
- iPhone 8 and later (including SE 2ndβ4th gen): Quick-press Volume Up, Volume Down, then hold Side Button until the Apple logo appears (~10 seconds)
- iPhone 7: Hold Volume Down + Side Button together until Apple logo
- iPhone 6s and earlier: Hold Home + Top/Side Button together until Apple logo
If the touchscreen works after restarting, it was a temporary software glitch. If the problem recurs, continue below.
Fix 2: Remove Screen Protector and Case
Screen protectors and cases can directly interfere with touch input:
- Cheap/thick protectors reduce sensitivity; air bubbles act as touch barriers
- Cases overlapping the screen edge trigger phantom touches or block swipes
- Cracked protectors confuse the digitizer with uneven surface contact
Remove both and test the bare screen. If touch works, replace with a quality protector.

π Difficulty & Time
π§ Replace the Screen: Step by Step
Step 1: Power Off & Prepare Workspace
Power the iPhone off completely. Set up a clean, well-lit workspace on a non-static surface (a microfiber cloth on a desk works). Have screw organizers ready.
Step 2: Remove Bottom Pentalobe Screws
Two pentalobe P2 screws at the bottom edge, one on each side of the Lightning/USB-C port. Keep these in a labeled section β they're essential for water resistance.
Step 3: Apply Heat Around the Screen Edges
Use a heat gun (low setting) or hair dryer to warm the perimeter for 1β2 minutes per side. The display adhesive is strong β heat softens it.
Step 4: Create Initial Gap with Suction Cup
Apply suction cup to the bottom-center of the screen. Pull upward steadily while pressing down on the aluminum frame. Listen for the adhesive to release.
Step 5: Insert Picks β Bottom and LEFT Side Only
Slide thin plastic picks into the gap. Work along the bottom and LEFT side. The RIGHT side has display ribbon cables β DO NOT pry there or you'll damage them.
Step 6: Lift Screen Like a Book
Open the screen upward at 90Β°. The ribbon cables are still attached β do not pull harder.
Step 7: Disconnect the Battery FIRST
Remove the bracket over the battery connector (2β3 tri-point Y000 screws), then gently lift the connector with a spudger. This prevents short-circuits when you disconnect the screen.
Step 8: Disconnect the Display Ribbon Cables
Remove the bracket over the display connectors at the top. Carefully lift each ribbon cable with a plastic spudger. Note the order β there are usually 3 (front sensors, OLED panel, digitizer).
Step 9: Transfer Components from Old Screen
Front camera assembly, earpiece speaker, and (on Face ID phones) the True Depth camera have to move from the old screen to the new one. Failing to transfer the original IC chip = Face ID stops working forever.
Step 10: Install New Screen + Reconnect
Reverse: connect display ribbons β bracket β battery connector β bracket. Test BEFORE sealing β boot the device and verify touch + display work.
Step 11: Apply New Adhesive + Seal
Most replacement kits include adhesive strips. Apply along the perimeter, then close the screen by aligning the top hinge edge first, then pressing the bottom shut. Re-install pentalobe screws.
β οΈ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Prying on the right side and tearing display ribbon cables (you've broken the new screen)
- Forgetting to disconnect the battery first (short-circuits the logic board)
- Not transferring the True Depth camera (kills Face ID permanently)
- Using too much heat (warps the OLED at temps over 150Β°F)
- Sealing without testing (have to redo everything if something doesn't work)
π₯ When to Call a Pro
If you damage a ribbon cable, snap a screw, or the new screen has dead pixels: stop. Apple charges $129β$429 depending on model. Third-party shops typically charge $179β$279 with a 90-day warranty. Mail-in services are available at iphoneipadfix.com/mail-in-repair.html.
Fix 3: Clean the Screen
The capacitive touchscreen detects your finger's conductivity β oil, moisture, and debris interfere with detection.
- Power off first, then wipe with a slightly damp lint-free microfiber cloth
- Make sure your fingers are clean and dry; use touchscreen-compatible gloves if needed
- Avoid window cleaner, alcohol wipes, or abrasive cloths β they damage the oleophobic coating
Fix 4: Check for Water Damage
Water damage causes phantom touches, dead zones, and intermittent response.
- Check the Liquid Contact Indicator: Remove the SIM tray β if the indicator inside is red or pink, liquid entered the phone
- Do NOT use a hair dryer β heat warps the display. Place in a dry area for 24-48 hours with silica gel packets (rice is a myth)
- If the LCI is triggered and touch is erratic, the digitizer flex cable may be corroding β get professional repair before damage spreads to the logic board
Fix 5: Adjust 3D Touch / Haptic Touch Settings
If the screen responds but feels "wrong," go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch:
- 3D Touch (iPhone 6sβXS): Adjust sensitivity between Light, Medium, and Firm
- Haptic Touch (iPhone 11+): Switch between Fast and Slow duration
- Disable "Touch Accommodations" if enabled β it may be filtering your touches
- Disable AssistiveTouch temporarily to rule out overlay interference
Fix 6: When the Screen Needs Replacement
If software fixes fail, the digitizer is likely damaged physically. Signs:
- Visible cracks β even hairline cracks sever the touch-sensing grid
- Consistent dead zones β specific areas never respond
- Phantom touches β screen activates on its own, opens random apps
- Works after restart but fails again β loose display cable
On modern iPhones, the digitizer is fused to the display β replacement means the entire screen assembly (~30-45 min professional repair).
