iPhone Touch Screen Not Working? 9 Fixes

iPhone touchscreen completely unresponsive, taps not registering, screen working only in some areas, or phantom touches appearing on their own? Here's how to fix it on any iPhone model.

โฑ๏ธ 5โ€“15 min ๐Ÿ’ช Easy ๐Ÿ“ฑ All iPhone models

Common Causes at a Glance

  • Wet or damp screen โ€” water on a capacitive display causes missed taps and phantom touches
  • Screen protector interference โ€” thick or poorly applied protectors disrupt touch sensing
  • Software freeze โ€” app or iOS crash causing touch to stop responding
  • Low temperature โ€” cold weather reduces capacitive sensitivity
  • Physical damage โ€” cracked digitizer from a drop affecting touch zones

๐Ÿ”ง Replace the Screen: Step by Step

Step 1: Power Off & Prepare Workspace

Power the iPhone off completely. Set up a clean, well-lit workspace on a non-static surface (a microfiber cloth on a desk works). Have screw organizers ready.

Step 2: Remove Bottom Pentalobe Screws

Two pentalobe P2 screws at the bottom edge, one on each side of the Lightning/USB-C port. Keep these in a labeled section โ€” they're essential for water resistance.

Step 3: Apply Heat Around the Screen Edges

Use a heat gun (low setting) or hair dryer to warm the perimeter for 1โ€“2 minutes per side. The display adhesive is strong โ€” heat softens it.

Step 4: Create Initial Gap with Suction Cup

Apply suction cup to the bottom-center of the screen. Pull upward steadily while pressing down on the aluminum frame. Listen for the adhesive to release.

Step 5: Insert Picks โ€” Bottom and LEFT Side Only

Slide thin plastic picks into the gap. Work along the bottom and LEFT side. The RIGHT side has display ribbon cables โ€” DO NOT pry there or you'll damage them.

Step 6: Lift Screen Like a Book

Open the screen upward at 90ยฐ. The ribbon cables are still attached โ€” do not pull harder.

Step 7: Disconnect the Battery FIRST

Remove the bracket over the battery connector (2โ€“3 tri-point Y000 screws), then gently lift the connector with a spudger. This prevents short-circuits when you disconnect the screen.

Step 8: Disconnect the Display Ribbon Cables

Remove the bracket over the display connectors at the top. Carefully lift each ribbon cable with a plastic spudger. Note the order โ€” there are usually 3 (front sensors, OLED panel, digitizer).

Step 9: Transfer Components from Old Screen

Front camera assembly, earpiece speaker, and (on Face ID phones) the True Depth camera have to move from the old screen to the new one. Failing to transfer the original IC chip = Face ID stops working forever.

Step 10: Install New Screen + Reconnect

Reverse: connect display ribbons โ†’ bracket โ†’ battery connector โ†’ bracket. Test BEFORE sealing โ€” boot the device and verify touch + display work.

Step 11: Apply New Adhesive + Seal

Most replacement kits include adhesive strips. Apply along the perimeter, then close the screen by aligning the top hinge edge first, then pressing the bottom shut. Re-install pentalobe screws.

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Prying on the right side and tearing display ribbon cables (you've broken the new screen)
  • Forgetting to disconnect the battery first (short-circuits the logic board)
  • Not transferring the True Depth camera (kills Face ID permanently)
  • Using too much heat (warps the OLED at temps over 150ยฐF)
  • Sealing without testing (have to redo everything if something doesn't work)

๐Ÿฅ When to Call a Pro

If you damage a ribbon cable, snap a screw, or the new screen has dead pixels: stop. Apple charges $129โ€“$429 depending on model. Third-party shops typically charge $179โ€“$279 with a 90-day warranty. Mail-in services are available at iphoneipadfix.com/mail-in-repair.html.

Step-by-Step Fixes

1Dry the Screen Completely

Moisture is the most overlooked cause of touch issues โ€” even light condensation disrupts the capacitive layer:

  1. Wipe the screen dry with a soft, lint-free cloth
  2. Also dry your fingertips โ€” wet or lotion-covered fingers don't register reliably
  3. Wait 30 seconds, then test
If you were near water, in humid conditions, or just washed your hands, this is almost certainly the cause.

2Force Restart the iPhone

A software freeze is the most common cause of sudden, complete touch unresponsiveness:

iPhone 8 and later (including all Face ID models):

  1. Press and quickly release Volume Up
  2. Press and quickly release Volume Down
  3. Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears (10โ€“15 sec)

iPhone 7 / 7 Plus:

  1. Hold Volume Down + Side button simultaneously until Apple logo appears

3Remove the Screen Protector

Screen protectors โ€” especially thick tempered glass ones โ€” can cause:

  • Reduced touch sensitivity in the corners
  • Complete dead zones where the protector bubbled or lifted
  • Phantom touches if static builds up between the protector and screen
  1. Carefully peel off the screen protector
  2. Clean the screen with a microfiber cloth
  3. Test touch response โ€” if it works normally, the protector was the issue

4Check 3D Touch / Haptic Touch Sensitivity

  1. Settings โ†’ Accessibility โ†’ Touch โ†’ Haptic Touch
  2. Set speed to Fast and test
  3. Also try: Settings โ†’ Accessibility โ†’ Touch โ†’ Touch Accommodations โ€” make sure it's set appropriately for your usage

5Warm Up the Phone

Capacitive touchscreens lose sensitivity below about 35ยฐF (2ยฐC):

  • Bring the phone indoors and let it reach room temperature
  • Hold it in your hand for a few minutes to warm it naturally
  • Do not use a heater or place it on a hot surface

6Update iOS

  1. Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Software Update
  2. Install any available update
  3. Touch responsiveness bugs are addressed in iOS point releases regularly

7Free Up Storage

When iPhone storage is nearly full (<1GB free), iOS performance degrades and can cause touch lag:

  1. Settings โ†’ General โ†’ iPhone Storage
  2. Delete unused apps, offload media to iCloud
  3. Aim for at least 2โ€“3GB free at all times

8Reset All Settings

  1. Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Transfer or Reset iPhone โ†’ Reset โ†’ Reset All Settings
  2. No data deleted โ€” resets Touch Accommodations, accessibility settings, and system preferences
  3. Retest touch after restart

9Restore iPhone

  1. Back up via iCloud or Finder first
  2. Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Transfer or Reset iPhone โ†’ Erase All Content and Settings
  3. Set up as new โ€” if touch works perfectly, restore from backup
  4. If touch still fails after a clean restore, the digitizer hardware is damaged and needs replacement
A cracked screen with touch dead zones, phantom touches, or lines across the display indicates digitizer damage โ€” requires professional screen replacement.
