iPhone Touch Screen Not Working?
Touch screen unresponsive, laggy, or only working in some areas? Before assuming you need a new screen, try these fixes - many touch issues are software-related or easily fixed.
Quick Diagnosis
- Entire screen unresponsive: Usually software - try fixes 1-4
- Part of screen doesn't work: Likely hardware damage - may need repair
- Ghost touches/random inputs: Screen protector, damage, or digitizer issue
- Laggy/slow response: Usually software or storage full
Fixes to Try
1 Clean Your Screen
Sounds simple, but moisture, oils, and dirt can interfere with touch sensitivity.
- Power off your iPhone
- Use a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth
- Slightly dampen with water (no chemicals)
- Wipe screen gently
- Dry completely before turning on
2 Remove Screen Protector
Cheap or damaged screen protectors often cause touch issues.
- Bubbles or lifting edges block touch
- Thick protectors reduce sensitivity
- Cracked protectors can cause ghost touches
Test your screen without the protector. If touch works, get a quality replacement protector.
3 Force Restart
Clears software glitches that can freeze the touch layer.
iPhone 8 and later:
- Press and release Volume Up
- Press and release Volume Down
- Hold Side Button until Apple logo appears
iPhone 7:
Hold Volume Down + Side Button for 10+ seconds
iPhone 6s and earlier:
Hold Home + Side/Top Button for 10+ seconds
4 Free Up Storage
When storage is full, iPhones get laggy and touch can feel unresponsive.
- Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage
- Check how much space is free
- If nearly full, delete unused apps, photos, or messages
- Target at least 2-3GB free space
5 Update iOS
Touch bugs are occasionally fixed in iOS updates.
- Go to Settings → General → Software Update
- Install any available updates
- Restart after updating
6 Adjust Touch Settings
Check if accessibility settings are affecting touch response:
- Go to Settings → Accessibility → Touch
- Check "Touch Accommodations" is OFF (unless you need it)
- Check "3D & Haptic Touch" sensitivity settings
- Make sure "Reachability" isn't confusing you
7 Check for Physical Damage
Examine your iPhone for damage that could affect touch:
- Screen cracks: Even small cracks can damage the digitizer
- Water exposure: Check SIM tray for red indicator
- Bent frame: Can disconnect internal cables
- Screen lifting: Could be swollen battery pushing on screen
8 Reset All Settings
If software issues persist, reset settings without losing data:
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
- Tap Reset → Reset All Settings
- Enter your passcode
- This resets WiFi, Bluetooth, and all settings to defaults
- Your apps and data remain
When You Need a New Screen
If none of the above worked, you likely have hardware damage:
- Screen cracked and touch doesn't work in damaged areas
- Touch stopped working after a drop (even without visible cracks)
- Ghost touches that won't stop
- Touch Disease (iPhone 6/6 Plus specific defect)
