iMessages stuck on "Sending," green SMS texts failing with a red !, or messages delivering to some people but not others? Covers both iMessage and SMS on all iPhone models running iOS 17 and iOS 18.

โšก Diagnose First โ€” Blue vs Green

Blue bubble = iMessage (uses Wi-Fi or cellular data). Green bubble = SMS (uses cellular network). They fail for completely different reasons. If only blue messages fail โ†’ iMessage/Apple ID issue. If only green messages fail โ†’ carrier/SIM issue. If both fail โ†’ network problem or airplane mode.

iMessage Not Sending (Blue Bubbles)

1Check Apple's iMessage server status

Visit apple.com/support/systemstatus โ€” look for "iMessage." If it shows a yellow or red indicator, Apple's servers are having issues and there's nothing to fix on your end โ€” wait it out. iMessage outages affect everyone simultaneously and are usually resolved within a few hours.

2Sign out and back into iMessage

Settings โ†’ Messages โ†’ toggle iMessage OFF โ†’ wait 30 seconds โ†’ toggle back ON. If that doesn't help: Settings โ†’ [Your Name] โ†’ Sign Out of iCloud โ†’ sign back in. iMessage authentication tokens expire or become invalid after iOS updates, Apple ID password changes, or prolonged app inactivity. A fresh sign-in re-registers your device with Apple's push notification servers and clears stuck outbox messages.

3Check Send & Receive addresses

Settings โ†’ Messages โ†’ Send & Receive. Verify both your phone number AND Apple ID email are checked under "You can be reached by iMessage at." If your phone number is missing or unchecked, iMessages sent to your number won't deliver. Also confirm "Start new conversations from" is set to your preferred address โ€” mismatches here cause messages to send from the wrong identity and appear in separate threads on the recipient's phone.

4Force-send as SMS

Long-press the stuck "Sending" bubble โ†’ Send as Text Message. This immediately sends via SMS carrier network, bypassing iMessage. If the SMS delivers, the problem is iMessage-specific. Enable "Send as SMS" as a fallback: Settings โ†’ Messages โ†’ Send as SMS (toggle ON). With this on, failed iMessages automatically retry as SMS โ€” most people should keep this enabled.

SMS Not Sending (Green Bubbles)

5Check cellular signal and carrier settings

Verify you have at least 1-2 bars of cellular signal. Toggle Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds then off โ€” this forces a fresh carrier registration. Check Settings โ†’ General โ†’ About for a carrier settings update prompt. SMS failures after carrier updates or SIM card re-seats are almost always resolved by a carrier settings update install.

6Check if the recipient is blocked

Settings โ†’ Phone โ†’ Blocked Contacts. If the number you're texting appears here, messages send from your end but are silently blocked โ€” you'll see "Delivered" sometimes but the recipient never gets them (behavior varies by carrier). Also check Settings โ†’ Messages โ†’ Blocked Contacts. Remove the number and retry.

7Check MMS settings for group texts and photos

Settings โ†’ Messages โ†’ MMS Messaging (toggle ON) and Group Messaging (toggle ON). MMS must be enabled to send photos, videos, or group texts via SMS. If MMS is off, photo messages queue indefinitely. Also verify Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ Cellular Data is ON โ€” MMS requires active cellular data even if you're on Wi-Fi because it routes through your carrier's MMS gateway.

โš ๏ธ "Not Delivered" to a specific person only: If texts fail to one contact but work with everyone else, the issue is likely on their end โ€” their phone is off, out of service, their storage is full, or they've blocked you. Try calling the same number. If calls also fail to connect, it's their device or carrier. If calls go through but texts don't, it's a messaging-specific issue on their end.

General Fixes for Both

8Restart iPhone

Hold Side + Volume Down โ†’ slide to power off โ†’ wait 30 seconds โ†’ restart. Clears the Messages daemon, SMS queue, and iMessage push notification state in one shot. After restarting, iOS reconnects to both Apple's iMessage servers and your carrier's SMS center simultaneously.

9Check storage space

Settings โ†’ General โ†’ iPhone Storage. If available storage is under 1 GB, iOS may fail to process outgoing messages (they need temporary storage for encoding). Delete large apps, offload unused apps, or clear old photo/video content. The Messages app itself can consume gigabytes โ€” Settings โ†’ General โ†’ iPhone Storage โ†’ Messages โ†’ Review Large Attachments to delete old media you've received.

10Reset Network Settings

Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Transfer or Reset iPhone โ†’ Reset โ†’ Reset Network Settings. Clears APN settings (required for MMS), VPN configurations, and cellular network registration data. After resetting, reconnect to Wi-Fi and re-enter the password. This resolves persistent messaging failures that survive restarts, particularly MMS and carrier SMS gateway issues.

11Update iOS and check date/time

Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Software Update. Also critically: Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Date & Time โ†’ Set Automatically (must be ON). iMessage authentication requires your device's time to be accurate within a few minutes of Apple's servers. If Set Automatically is off and your clock drifted, every iMessage attempt fails with a server authentication error that looks like a network problem.

โœ… iMessage "Delivered" vs "Read": "Delivered" means the message reached Apple's servers and was queued for the recipient's device. "Read" means their device confirmed receipt and they opened the thread (if they have Read Receipts enabled). A message that shows "Delivered" for hours without "Read" means their device received it โ€” they just haven't opened it yet. This is not a sending failure.

Still can't send texts?

Persistent SMS failure after a network reset usually points to a SIM card or antenna issue. PC Medics of NJ can diagnose and repair cellular hardware on all iPhone models.
