iPhone System Data Taking Too Much Storage
"System Data" eating up your storage? Here's what it is and how to reduce it.
📊 What is System Data?
System Data (formerly "Other") includes:
- Caches from Safari, Mail, and apps
- Siri voices and dictionaries
- Logs and temporary files
- Streaming music/video caches
- Offline content and downloads
Check yours: Settings → General → iPhone Storage
🔧 Fix #1: Clear Safari Cache
- Go to Settings → Safari
- Tap Clear History and Website Data
- Confirm
🔧 Fix #2: Offload Unused Apps
- Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage
- Enable Offload Unused Apps
- Or manually offload specific apps
🔧 Fix #3: Delete and Reinstall Apps
Apps like Spotify, Netflix, and social media cache tons of data:
- Delete the app
- Reinstall from App Store
- This clears all cached data
🔧 Fix #4: Clear Messages Attachments
- Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Messages
- Review Large Attachments
- Delete old photos/videos from Messages
🔧 Fix #5: Restart iPhone
A restart clears temporary caches:
- Press Side + Volume buttons
- Slide to power off
- Wait 30 seconds, turn back on
- Check storage again
🔧 Fix #6: Backup and Restore (Nuclear Option)
This clears all caches and System Data:
- Backup to iCloud or Mac
- Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content
- Restore from backup
This can free up 10-20GB+ of System Data
