iPhone Stuck on Apple Logo β Boot Loop Fix Guide
An iPhone stuck on the Apple logo is one of the most common and alarming issues. The screen shows the Apple logo, sometimes with a progress bar, but never reaches the home screen. This guide covers every iPhone model from iPhone 6s to iPhone 16, with model-specific button combos for force restart, recovery mode, and DFU mode.

π Why iPhones Get Stuck on the Apple Logo
- Failed iOS update: If the phone lost power, lost WiFi, or encountered an error during an over-the-air update, the operating system can be left in a half-installed, unbootable state.
- Corrupted system files or storage: A full storage drive (especially under 1GB free) can prevent iOS from completing its boot sequence. Corrupted apps or filesystem errors have the same effect.
- Failed jailbreak or beta software: Unofficial iOS modifications or expired beta profiles can cause boot loops after a restart.
- Hardware failure: A failing NAND storage chip, damaged logic board, or faulty battery can cause the phone to repeatedly restart during boot, creating a loop.
- Data transfer interruption: If a device-to-device migration or iCloud restore was interrupted, the phone may be stuck waiting for data that will never arrive.
π§ Fix 1: Force Restart (By Model)
A force restart is not the same as a normal restart β it cuts power to the processor and forces a cold boot. This fixes most temporary boot loops.
iPhone 8, iPhone SE (2nd/3rd gen), iPhone X, and all newer models (XS, XR, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, SE 4)
- Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
- Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).
- Release the Side button when you see the Apple logo β the phone will attempt to boot normally.
iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus
- Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Side (power) button simultaneously.
- Keep holding both for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
- Release both buttons and wait for the phone to boot.
iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE (1st gen)
- Press and hold the Home button and the Side (power) button simultaneously.
- Keep holding both for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
- Release both buttons.
If the phone boots normally after a force restart, immediately go to Settings β General β Software Update and install any pending updates. Then check Settings β General β iPhone Storage and free up space if you are under 2GB.
π§ Fix 2: Recovery Mode + Update via Computer
If force restart did not help, recovery mode lets you reinstall iOS without erasing your data (using the "Update" option). You will need a Mac or Windows PC with iTunes (Windows) or Finder (macOS Catalina and later).
Step 1: Connect to Your Computer
- Connect your iPhone to the computer with a USB cable (USB-C to USB-C for iPhone 15/16, Lightning to USB for older models).
- Open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows).
Step 2: Enter Recovery Mode
iPhone 8 and newer (including SE 2nd/3rd/4th gen):
- Quickly press and release Volume Up.
- Quickly press and release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button β do NOT release when the Apple logo appears.
- Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen (a cable pointing to a computer icon).
iPhone 7/7 Plus: Hold Volume Down + Side button together until the recovery mode screen appears.
iPhone 6s and older: Hold Home + Side button together until the recovery mode screen appears.
Step 3: Update or Restore
- Your computer will detect the phone in recovery mode and show two options: Update or Restore.
- Choose Update first β this reinstalls iOS while keeping your data.
- Wait for the download and installation to complete (15β30 minutes depending on your internet speed).
- If Update fails or the phone re-enters the boot loop, repeat the process and choose Restore instead. Warning: Restore erases all data on the phone.
π§ Fix 3: DFU Mode Restore (Last Resort)
DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is the deepest restore level. It bypasses the bootloader entirely and rewrites the firmware from scratch. Use this only if recovery mode did not work.
DFU Mode for iPhone 8 and newer
- Connect the iPhone to your computer and open Finder/iTunes.
- Quickly press and release Volume Up.
- Quickly press and release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button for 10 seconds.
- While still holding the Side button, also press and hold the Volume Down button for 5 seconds.
- Release the Side button but keep holding Volume Down for another 10 seconds.
- The screen should remain completely black β if you see the Apple logo, you held too long and need to start over.
- Your computer will detect a device in DFU mode and prompt you to Restore.
DFU Mode for iPhone 7/7 Plus
- Connect to computer. Hold Side + Volume Down for 10 seconds.
- Release Side but keep holding Volume Down for 10 more seconds.
- Screen stays black β computer detects DFU mode.
DFU Mode for iPhone 6s and older
- Connect to computer. Hold Side + Home for 10 seconds.
- Release Side but keep holding Home for 10 more seconds.
- Screen stays black β computer detects DFU mode.
After DFU detection: Click Restore in Finder/iTunes. The computer will download and install a fresh copy of iOS. This erases all data but gives the phone the best chance of recovery.
β οΈ When It Is a Hardware Problem
- Boot loop persists even after DFU restore: The NAND flash storage chip is likely failing β this requires micro-soldering to replace.
- Phone gets extremely hot during the boot loop β this may indicate a short circuit on the logic board.
- Boot loop started after a drop or water exposure: Physical damage to internal components is the likely cause, not software.
- Progress bar during boot repeatedly fills to the same point and restarts: This pattern usually indicates a hardware failure rather than a software issue.
Recommended: MFi-certified iPhone cables on Amazon β a bad cable can cause restore failures that mimic hardware problems.
π Need Professional Help?
If your iPhone is still stuck after DFU mode, it almost certainly needs board-level repair. Do not keep attempting restores β bring it to a professional.
