🔄 What Is a Boot Loop?

A boot loop is when your iPhone gets stuck in a restart cycle — it shows the Apple logo, seems like it's starting up, then restarts and shows the logo again. This can repeat endlessly.

Common causes:

  • Failed iOS update: Interrupted or corrupted update
  • Jailbreak gone wrong: Unstable tweaks or bad jailbreak
  • Storage completely full: No space for iOS to function
  • Battery issues: Dying battery causing power drops
  • Corrupted system files: Software corruption
  • Hardware failure: Logic board or memory issues

⚡ Fix #1: Force Restart

Always try this first — it works surprisingly often:

iPhone 8, X, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16:

  1. Press and quickly release Volume Up
  2. Press and quickly release Volume Down
  3. Press and hold Side button until you see the Apple logo
  4. Keep holding even if you see "slide to power off"
  5. Release when Apple logo appears

iPhone 7:

  1. Press and hold both Volume Down + Power
  2. Hold until Apple logo appears (10+ seconds)

iPhone 6s and earlier:

  1. Press and hold both Home + Power
  2. Hold until Apple logo appears (10+ seconds)

🔌 Fix #2: Charge Your iPhone

Low battery can cause boot loops:

  1. Connect to a wall charger (not computer USB)
  2. Use Apple or MFi-certified cable
  3. Wait at least 30 minutes
  4. Try force restart again

Tip: If you see a red battery icon, your phone was critically low. Charge for at least an hour before trying anything else.

🍏 Fix #3: Update iOS via Recovery Mode (Keeps Data)

This reinstalls iOS without erasing your data — try this before restoring:

  1. Connect iPhone to computer with iTunes (Windows) or Finder (macOS)
  2. Put iPhone in Recovery Mode:
    • iPhone 8+: Volume Up (tap), Volume Down (tap), hold Side button until Recovery screen
    • iPhone 7: Hold Volume Down + Power until Recovery screen
    • iPhone 6s-: Hold Home + Power until Recovery screen
  3. You'll see a "connect to computer" screen on iPhone
  4. Computer will show "Update or Restore" prompt
  5. Click "Update" (NOT Restore)
  6. Wait for download and installation (can take 15-30 min)

Important: "Update" keeps your data. "Restore" erases everything!

💾 Fix #4: Restore iPhone (Last Resort)

If Update fails, you may need to restore. This erases everything:

  1. Put iPhone in Recovery Mode (same steps as above)
  2. Click "Restore" when prompted
  3. Wait for iOS to download and install
  4. Set up as new or restore from backup

⚠️ Warning: This deletes all data on your iPhone. Only do this if you have a backup, or if Update didn't work.

🔧 Fix #5: DFU Mode Restore (Deepest Reset)

DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is the most complete restore:

iPhone 8 and newer:

  1. Connect to computer
  2. Press Volume Up (tap), Volume Down (tap)
  3. Hold Side button until screen goes black
  4. When black, hold Side + Volume Down for 5 seconds
  5. Release Side button, keep holding Volume Down for 10 seconds
  6. Screen stays black but computer detects iPhone
  7. Restore in iTunes/Finder

iPhone 7:

  1. Connect to computer
  2. Hold Power + Volume Down together for 8 seconds
  3. Release Power, keep holding Volume Down for 5 seconds
  4. Screen stays black, computer detects iPhone

iPhone 6s and earlier:

  1. Connect to computer
  2. Hold Power + Home together for 8 seconds
  3. Release Power, keep holding Home for 5 seconds
  4. Screen stays black, computer detects iPhone

🛠️ Third-Party Tools (Advanced)

If Apple's methods fail, these tools can sometimes help:

  • ReiBoot (Tenorshare): One-click recovery mode exit
  • Dr.Fone: iOS system repair tool
  • iMazing: Advanced iOS management

Note: Be cautious with third-party tools. Use reputable software only and research before downloading.

🚨 Hardware Boot Loops

If software fixes don't work, you may have a hardware issue:

  • Failing battery: Can't deliver stable power (especially in cold weather)
  • Water damage: Corrosion causing shorts
  • Memory failure: NAND storage corruption
  • Logic board issue: Component failure

These require professional diagnosis and repair.
