🔊 Diagnose Which Speaker Failed

iPhones have multiple speakers — identify which one isn't working:

  1. Bottom speaker (loudspeaker): No sound during video playback, music, or speaker calls
  2. Earpiece (top): Can't hear during phone calls, even when volume is up
  3. Receiver speaker: Silent during FaceTime or audio calls

Quick test: Play a video with sound. If you hear nothing, it's likely the bottom speaker. If you hear sound from bottom but can't hear calls, the earpiece is bad.

✅ What You'll Need
  • Replacement speaker — matched to your iPhone model and speaker type
  • Pentalobe P2 screwdriver — for bottom screws
  • Phillips screwdriver — for internal screws (size 000 or 00)
  • Plastic spudger/pry tool set — to safely separate components
  • Suction cup — to lift the screen
  • Heat gun or hair dryer — to soften screen adhesive
  • Tweezers — for small connector manipulation
  • Isopropyl alcohol (90%+) — for adhesive cleanup
  • Work mat and small containers — to organize screws
  • Lint-free cloth

🔍 Step 1: Identify Your iPhone Model and Speaker Type

Speaker part numbers vary by model:

  • iPhone 15 Pro: Bottom speaker (A3297) or earpiece speaker (A3296)
  • iPhone 14 Pro: Bottom speaker or earpiece — check iFixit or your parts supplier for exact model
  • iPhone 13/12: Similar replacement pattern to 14 Pro
  • iPhone 11: Bottom speaker slightly different — verify part before purchasing

When ordering, specify your iPhone model, capacity, and whether you're replacing the bottom speaker or earpiece.

🛑 Step 2: Backup and Power Off

  1. Back up your iPhone via iCloud (Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup)
  2. Power off completely (hold side button + volume down until "slide to power off" appears)
  3. Wait 5 minutes before starting — capacitors may still be charged

🔓 Step 3: Remove Pentalobe Screws

The bottom of the iPhone has two pentalobe screws near the charging port:

  1. Use a Pentalobe P2 screwdriver
  2. Remove both screws carefully — don't strip them
  3. Store in a labeled container

🔥 Step 4: Heat and Lift the Screen

  1. Use a heat gun (130-140°C / 260-285°F) or hair dryer on high for 30-45 seconds
  2. Move the heat around the entire perimeter of the screen
  3. Apply the suction cup to the screen and pull gently upward
  4. Insert a plastic spudger into the gap at the top and work around the edges
  5. Go slowly — the screen is connected by flex cables at the top

🔗 Step 5: Disconnect Screen Flex Cables

  1. Open the two metal L-shaped brackets at the top that secure the flex connectors
  2. Gently disconnect each connector by sliding it out (or pushing down and sliding, depending on connector type)
  3. Carefully lay the screen to the side, still attached to the frame by adhesive if easier to manage

🔊 Step 6: Locate and Remove the Speaker

For bottom speaker:

  1. The bottom speaker is typically located at the bottom of the phone, near the lightning port
  2. It's held in place by 1-2 small screws
  3. Remove the screws with a Phillips screwdriver (size 000 or 00)
  4. The speaker may have a flex cable connector — gently disconnect it using tweezers
  5. Lift the speaker out

For earpiece (top) speaker:

  1. The earpiece is at the top of the phone, near the receiver mesh
  2. It's usually held by 1-2 small screws
  3. Remove screws and disconnect the flex cable
  4. Lift the speaker out

✨ Step 7: Install New Speaker

  1. Position the new speaker in the same location as the old one
  2. Reconnect the flex cable connector — align carefully and push down firmly
  3. Reinstall the screws (don't over-tighten)
  4. Ensure the speaker sits flush in its housing

📱 Step 8: Reconnect Screen and Reassemble

  1. Reconnect the three screen flex cables at the top — push each down firmly until you hear/feel them click
  2. Close the two metal L-shaped brackets to lock the connectors
  3. Carefully lower the screen onto the frame, aligning the corners
  4. Press firmly around the entire perimeter to activate the screen adhesive
  5. Reinstall the two pentalobe screws at the bottom

✅ Step 9: Power On and Test

  1. Press the side button to power on
  2. Test the speaker that was replaced:
  3. Bottom speaker: Play a video or song and verify sound comes through
  4. Earpiece: Make a test call to a friend and confirm you can hear them
  5. Test volume buttons — volume should change
  6. Test all touchscreen areas to ensure screen is responsive

⚠️ Troubleshooting

Still no sound after replacement:

  • Speaker connector may not be fully seated — power off and reseat it
  • The new speaker may be defective — try a different replacement
  • Check audio settings: Settings → Sounds & Haptics → ensure volume is up and not muted
  • Check if headphone mode is stuck: Settings → Accessibility → Audio/Visual → check mono audio is off

Distorted or muffled sound:

  • Speaker may not be installed flush — remove and reinstall
  • Ensure no debris or foam padding is blocking the speaker mesh

Screen not responding or flickering:

  • Screen connectors may not be fully seated — power off and reseat all three connectors
  • Verify the L-shaped brackets are closed and secured
