iPhone Spatial Audio Not Working - Fix Guide

⏱️ 5-10 minutes 📊 Easy 💰 Free (software fix)

Spatial Audio creates an immersive 3D sound experience with supported AirPods, making audio sound like it's coming from all around you. If it's not working, here's how to fix it.

📋 Requirements

  • AirPods: AirPods Pro (1st/2nd gen), AirPods (3rd gen), AirPods Max
  • iPhone: iPhone 7 or later with iOS 14+
  • Content: Must be Dolby Atmos, 5.1, or 7.1 surround sound
  • Apps: Apple TV, Apple Music, Disney+, Netflix, HBO Max, etc.

✅ Enable Spatial Audio

  1. Connect your AirPods to iPhone
  2. Open Control Center (swipe down from top-right)
  3. Press and hold the volume slider
  4. Tap Spatial Audio at the bottom
  5. Choose Fixed or Head Tracked

Fixed: 3D audio stays in place. Head Tracked: Audio adjusts as you move your head.

🔧 Troubleshooting

1. Check Content Support

Not all content supports Spatial Audio:

  • Look for "Dolby Atmos" badge in Apple TV/Music
  • Stereo content won't trigger Spatial Audio
  • YouTube videos are usually stereo (no spatial)

2. Enable Dolby Atmos in Settings

  1. Settings → Music
  2. Tap Dolby Atmos
  3. Select Always On or Automatic

3. Update AirPods Firmware

  1. Connect AirPods to iPhone
  2. Put AirPods in case, connect to power
  3. Keep iPhone nearby — updates install automatically
  4. Check version: Settings → Bluetooth → [AirPods] ⓘ → Firmware Version

4. Reset AirPods

  1. Put AirPods in case, close lid
  2. Wait 30 seconds
  3. Open lid, press and hold button on back until light flashes amber then white
  4. Re-pair with iPhone

5. Restart iPhone

  1. Press and hold Side + Volume buttons
  2. Slide to power off
  3. Wait 30 seconds, turn back on
🎧 Head Tracking Not Working?
  • Make sure "Head Tracked" is selected (not "Fixed")
  • Head tracking requires AirPods Pro or AirPods Max
  • Regular AirPods 3rd gen have spatial but no head tracking
  • Try recalibrating: remove AirPods, reinsert, move head side to side
📱 Personalized Spatial Audio

iOS 16+ can scan your ears for personalized audio:

  1. Settings → [Your AirPods]
  2. Tap Personalized Spatial Audio
  3. Follow prompts to scan your ears with camera
🎬 Check App Settings
  • Apple TV: Settings → Audio → Spatial Audio ON
  • Netflix: Look for "Spatial Audio" in audio options during playback
  • Disney+: Should work automatically with Atmos content
