iPhone SharePlay Not Working - Complete Fix Guide
SharePlay lets you watch movies, listen to music, and share your screen with friends during FaceTime calls. When it's not working, here's how to fix it.
📋 Requirements for SharePlay
- iOS Version: iOS 15.1 or later (both participants)
- FaceTime: Must be on an active FaceTime call
- App Support: Both users need the app (TV+, Spotify, Disney+, etc.)
- Subscription: For paid content, both users may need subscriptions
- Same Region: Some content is region-locked
✅ Enable SharePlay
- Open Settings
- Tap FaceTime
- Enable SharePlay
Both participants must have SharePlay enabled.
🔧 Troubleshooting Steps
1. Start FaceTime First
SharePlay only works during an active FaceTime call:
- Start a FaceTime video or audio call
- Once connected, open the app you want to share (TV, Music, etc.)
- Start playing content
- Tap "SharePlay" when prompted
2. Check App Compatibility
Not all apps support SharePlay. Supported apps include:
- Apple TV+
- Apple Music
- Disney+
- Hulu
- HBO Max
- Paramount+
- TikTok
- Spotify (for Premium users)
Check the app's settings for "SharePlay" option.
3. Update Everything
- Update iOS: Settings → General → Software Update
- Update the streaming app from App Store
- Ask the other person to update too
4. Both Users Need the App
If only you have the app installed, the other person will see a prompt to download it. They must install it for SharePlay to work.
5. Check Subscription Requirements
- Apple TV+: Both need subscriptions OR the sharer can request "Play for Everyone"
- Other services: Requirements vary — check service policies
🖥️ Screen Sharing Not Working?
To share your screen instead of media:
- During FaceTime call, tap the screen
- Tap the SharePlay button (person with lines icon)
- Select Share My Screen
- Tap Start Broadcast
Screen sharing has its own toggle: Settings → FaceTime → SharePlay
⚠️ SharePlay Keeps Disconnecting?
- Poor connection: SharePlay needs stable internet on both ends
- Switch to WiFi: Cellular can be unreliable for streaming
- Close other apps: Free up bandwidth and memory
- Restart FaceTime: End call and start fresh
🔊 Audio Sync Issues?
- SharePlay syncs playback but slight delays are normal
- If badly out of sync, pause and resume together
- Try having one person control playback
- Check internet speed — slow connections cause delays
🔄 Reset FaceTime
- Settings → FaceTime
- Toggle FaceTime OFF
- Restart iPhone
- Toggle FaceTime back ON
- Try SharePlay again
🌐 Regional Restrictions
Some content can't be shared across regions:
- Movie availability varies by country
- Some services aren't available in all regions
- VPNs may interfere with SharePlay
