iPhone Settings Most People Don't Change But Should (2026)

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

14 iPhone settings that take 30 seconds each to change and dramatically improve daily iPhone life. These are the settings we recommend to every customer who walks into our repair shop โ€” privacy, battery, accessibility, security. Most people never touch them. Should you? Probably yes for almost all of these.

๐Ÿ”‹ 1. Optimized Battery Charging

Settings โ†’ Battery โ†’ Battery Health & Charging โ†’ Charging Optimization โ†’ "Optimized Battery Charging" ON

Most users have this off because it slows down to 80% then sits before completing to 100%. But it doubles battery lifespan. Worth the slower overnight charges.

๐ŸŒ™ 2. Sleep Focus Mode (Replace Do Not Disturb)

Settings โ†’ Focus โ†’ Sleep โ€” configure schedule + allowed apps

Most people still use "Do Not Disturb" the old way. The new Sleep Focus is much better โ€” automatically activates at bedtime, dims display, hides notifications. Configure once, never think about it again.

๐Ÿ”’ 3. Hide Notification Previews on Lock Screen

Settings โ†’ Notifications โ†’ Show Previews โ†’ "When Unlocked" (not "Always")

The default shows full message contents on the lock screen. Anyone glancing at your phone reads your texts. Change to "When Unlocked" โ€” the message arrives, but Face ID is required to see content.

๐Ÿšซ 4. Disable App Tracking

Settings โ†’ Privacy & Security โ†’ Tracking โ†’ "Allow Apps to Request to Track" OFF

Apps will ask to track you across other apps for ad targeting. Turn this OFF globally and apps won't even ask. Improves privacy and reduces ad relevance scoring.

๐Ÿ“ 5. Limit Location Services to "While Using"

Settings โ†’ Privacy & Security โ†’ Location Services โ†’ review each app

Most apps don't need to track location when you're not using them. Set Uber, food delivery, social apps to "While Using." Saves battery and privacy.

๐Ÿ“ธ 6. Default to JPEG (not HEIC) Camera

Settings โ†’ Camera โ†’ Formats โ†’ "Most Compatible" (JPEG/H.264)

HEIC saves storage but is incompatible with Windows, older Macs, many web upload sites. Unless you're tight on storage AND only share with newer Apple devices, switch to JPEG. The compatibility tax of HEIC isn't worth the 30% storage savings for most people.

๐Ÿ“Š 7. Enable Camera Grid (Composition)

Settings โ†’ Camera โ†’ Composition โ†’ Grid ON

Shows the rule-of-thirds gridlines when taking photos. Instantly improves your composition. Free quality upgrade.

๐ŸŽจ 8. Customize Photographic Styles

Settings โ†’ Camera โ†’ Photographic Styles โ†’ pick a default (iPhone 13 Pro and newer)

Affects every photo you take subtly. "Vibrant Cool" pops colors. "Rich Contrast" emphasizes shadows. "Standard" is Apple's neutral default. Test each โ€” most people prefer something other than Standard.

๐Ÿ”” 9. Notification Summary (Reduce Buzz)

Settings โ†’ Notifications โ†’ Scheduled Summary โ€” configure delivery times

Instead of getting notifications from non-urgent apps all day, batch them into 1-2 daily digests. Reduces the constant phone-buzzing without losing important alerts (urgent apps still come through immediately).

โšก 10. Auto Low Power Mode Trigger

Settings โ†’ Battery โ†’ Low Power Mode โ€” configure automation in Shortcuts app

Don't wait for the 20% warning. Set Shortcuts โ†’ Automation โ†’ "Battery Level falls below 30%" โ†’ "Turn Low Power Mode on." Squeezes 1-2 more hours out of every charge by starting earlier.

๐Ÿ†˜ 11. Emergency SOS Quick-Press

Settings โ†’ Emergency SOS โ€” review settings

Holding power button + volume up = calls 911. With "Call with Hold and Release" OFF, this works without countdown. Important to know how it works AND set up Medical ID + emergency contacts. Could save your life or a stranger's.

๐Ÿ‘€ 12. Disable "Hey Siri" if You Don't Use It

Settings โ†’ Siri & Search โ†’ "Listen for 'Hey Siri'" OFF

The mic is always listening for Siri unless you turn this off. Saves a small amount of battery and improves privacy. If you never use voice Siri, it's a no-brainer.

๐ŸŽต 13. Lossless Audio (If You Have AirPods Pro 2 or Wired)

Settings โ†’ Music โ†’ Audio Quality โ†’ Lossless

Apple Music supports lossless audio for free. Most users have it disabled by default. Bluetooth doesn't pass lossless (so AirPods can't fully use it), but wired headphones, USB DACs, and Apple Vision Pro do. Worth enabling if you have any of those.

๐Ÿšท 14. Disable Significant Locations

Settings โ†’ Privacy & Security โ†’ Location Services โ†’ System Services โ†’ Significant Locations OFF (or review history)

iOS quietly logs every "significant" location you visit (home, work, regularly-visited spots) for "improved Maps suggestions." The data stays on-device, but most users don't know it exists. Turn OFF if privacy-conscious, or at least review what's been logged.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ One More Setting: Stolen Device Protection

Settings โ†’ Face ID & Passcode โ†’ Stolen Device Protection ON

Added in iOS 17.3 and underused. Requires biometric authentication (Face ID/Touch ID โ€” no passcode fallback) for sensitive operations when iPhone is away from familiar locations. Protects against the "thief watches you enter your passcode, then steals your phone" attack. Should be ON for everyone.
