The iPhone SE (4th generation, 2025) brings the biggest SE redesign ever โ a 6.1" OLED display, Face ID (no Home button), A18 chip, and USB-C. If your SE 4 won't turn on or is stuck on a black screen, work through these fixes in order.

๐ Step 1: Check What You're Actually Seeing
The symptom determines which fix to start with:
- Completely black screen, no response: Dead battery, crash, or hardware issue โ start at Step 2
- Apple logo then black screen: Software crash or boot loop โ go to Step 4
- Screen is on but unresponsive: Frozen โ force restart at Step 3
- Screen has a faint image visible in bright light: Backlight failure โ hardware repair needed
- One tap to Side button does nothing: May just be low battery โ charge for 15 minutes first
๐ Step 2: Charge the Battery First
A completely dead battery won't show any charging indicator for the first few minutes โ many people assume the phone is broken when it just needs power.
- Connect your SE 4 to a USB-C cable and known-good wall adapter (the SE 4 uses USB-C, not Lightning)
- Use a 20W USB-C PD adapter for faster recovery โ a phone charger, not a computer USB port
- Wait at least 15-20 full minutes without touching the phone
- After 15 minutes, press and hold the Side button for 3-5 seconds to see if it responds
- If you see a red battery icon โ that's good, the phone is recognizing the charge. Keep waiting
- If still nothing after 30 minutes, move to Step 3
๐ Step 3: Force Restart the iPhone SE 4
The SE 4 uses the same force restart method as iPhone 16 โ this is different from SE 3 (which held the Home button). Since the SE 4 has no Home button:
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button
- Press and hold the Side button (right side) until you see the Apple logo โ this takes about 8 seconds, keep holding even if the screen stays black
- Release when the Apple logo appears
- The phone should boot normally within 30-60 seconds
Tip: This is the most common fix for an SE 4 that appears dead. It works even if the screen shows nothing โ trust the sequence and keep holding the Side button.
๐ป Step 4: Enter Recovery Mode (DFU Restore)
If force restart doesn't work or the phone is stuck in a boot loop, Recovery Mode lets you reinstall iOS through a Mac or PC without losing data (if possible).
- Connect your iPhone SE 4 to a computer via USB-C cable
- Open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows)
- With the phone connected, perform the force restart sequence: Volume Up โ Volume Down โ hold Side button
- This time, keep holding the Side button even after the Apple logo โ don't release until you see the Recovery Mode screen (a laptop/iTunes icon with a cable)
- In Finder/iTunes, click Update first โ this reinstalls iOS without erasing your data
- If Update fails, click Restore โ this erases the phone but fixes software issues
๐ ๏ธ Step 5: Hardware Checks
If software fixes haven't worked, there may be a hardware issue. Common culprits for an SE 4 that won't turn on:
- Failed battery: If the phone died suddenly and won't charge at all, the battery may have hit a protection threshold. Replacement cost: $80-$120 at a shop
- Water damage: SE 4 is rated IP68 but liquid can still cause board damage. Look for corrosion around the USB-C port or SIM tray
- Dropped and not turned on since: Impact can disconnect internal flex cables. Professional diagnosis recommended
- Swollen battery: If the back glass is slightly raised or the screen gap looks uneven, the battery is swollen โ do not charge, seek repair immediately
๐ SE 4 vs SE 3: Key Differences for Repair
The SE 4 is a completely different phone from its predecessors. If you're used to the older SE, be aware:
- No Home button โ Face ID only, no Touch ID
- USB-C instead of Lightning โ requires different cables and accessories
- Face ID sensor bar at top (like iPhone 14 notch design) โ no Dynamic Island
- Force restart uses Volume Up/Down/Side, same as iPhone 16 (not the old hold-Home+Side method)
- A18 chip โ same as iPhone 16, fully supports Apple Intelligence
