โœ… Before You Start

  1. Check battery health first: Settings โ†’ Battery โ†’ Battery Health & Charging
  2. Back up your phone (iCloud or Mac/PC)
  3. Discharge battery to under 25% โ€” safer when opening
  4. Have a clean workspace with good lighting
  5. Keep a small magnetic parts tray for screws โ€” there are many

๐Ÿ”ง Step-by-Step: Battery Replacement

Step 1: Remove Bottom Screws

  1. Power off the phone completely
  2. Remove the two P2 Pentalobe screws at the bottom of the device (flanking the USB-C port)
  3. Set screws aside in a labeled container โ€” they're easy to lose

Step 2: Open the Display

  1. Heat the bottom edge of the screen with a heating pad for 1โ€“2 minutes to soften adhesive
  2. Apply suction cup slightly above the Home button area (bottom of screen)
  3. Pull the suction cup while sliding a plastic pick along the bottom edge gap
  4. Work picks around the left side, then right โ€” never pry the top edge
  5. Swing the display open from the bottom, propping it at ~45ยฐ โ€” don't stress the cables

Step 3: Disconnect the Battery First

  1. Locate the battery connector bracket near the middle of the logic board
  2. Remove its 4 Y000 screws
  3. Lift the bracket away
  4. Use a spudger to pry the battery connector straight up โ€” disconnect before touching anything else

Step 4: Remove the Old Battery

  1. The battery is secured with pull-tab adhesive strips (usually 2 strips)
  2. Locate the pull tabs at the bottom edge of the battery
  3. Pull each tab slowly at a low angle (nearly parallel to the phone back) โ€” they stretch to release
  4. If tabs break, heat the back of the phone for 90 seconds and use a spudger to carefully lever the battery out โ€” never puncture it
  5. Remove the battery; recycle it properly (many stores accept lithium batteries)

Step 5: Install New Battery

  1. Peel the backing off new adhesive strips and apply them under the new battery
  2. Align the battery connector flex cable toward the top-right of the battery bay
  3. Press the battery firmly into place
  4. Reconnect the battery connector โ€” listen/feel for a click
  5. Replace the connector bracket and its 4 screws

Step 6: Reassemble and Test

  1. Before closing, power on and check battery percentage appears correctly
  2. Test basic functions: calls, camera, Face ID
  3. If all good, apply fresh adhesive around the screen perimeter
  4. Press screen into frame firmly and hold for 60 seconds
  5. Reinstall the two Pentalobe bottom screws

Step 7: Recalibrate the Battery

  1. Charge the new battery to 100% on first use
  2. Use the phone until it shuts off (deep discharge cycle)
  3. Charge back to 100% without interruption
  4. Check Settings โ†’ Battery โ†’ Battery Health โ€” should read 100%

โš ๏ธ Battery Safety Warnings

  • Never puncture the battery โ€” lithium fires are dangerous and difficult to extinguish
  • If the old battery is swollen (raised/puffy), do not press or flex it
  • Work in a ventilated area when handling swollen batteries
  • Dispose of old batteries at a certified recycling point (Best Buy, Staples, Apple Store)

๐Ÿ’ฐ Cost Comparison

  • DIY (budget battery): $20โ€“$35
  • DIY (high-capacity aftermarket): $40โ€“$60
  • Local repair shop: $60โ€“$100 (labor + parts)
  • Apple Store (AppleCare+): Free if covered / $99 without
