  3. Web Content → 'Limit Adult Websites' (blocks 95% of adult sites)
  4. App Store → 'Don't Allow' for: In-app Purchases, App Removal
  5. App Store → Apps allowed by age (17+ blocks mature games)
  6. Music → 'Clean only'
  7. Movies → PG / PG-13 / R restrictions
  8. TV Shows → age limit (TV-14 max for tweens)
  9. Books → restrict explicit
  10. Web Content custom URLs to allow / block

Web Filter Effectiveness

'Limit Adult Websites' setting blocks: 95% of adult sites. Apple maintains constant blocklist.

Doesn't block: VPNs (kid can install). New sites Apple hasn't blocked yet.

For airtight filtering: combine with router-level filtering (OpenDNS Family, NextDNS).

Disable VPNs for Kids

Kids can install VPN to bypass content filters.

Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy → 'Allow VPN' → OFF (requires Screen Time passcode).

Communication Limits

Settings → Screen Time → Communication Limits → set during 'Allowed Communication':

  • 'Contacts Only' — only people in kid's contacts
  • 'Anyone' — unrestricted (avoid for kids)
  • 'Specific Contacts' — manually approved list

For young kids: 'Contacts Only' + add only family + 2-3 close friends.

Always Allowed Apps

Settings → Screen Time → Always Allowed → add: Phone, Messages, Maps, FaceTime, Education apps.

These work even during Downtime (bedtime). Critical for emergencies.

Don't put games or social media in Always Allowed — defeats purpose.

App Store Restrictions

Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy → App Store:

  • Installing Apps: Don't Allow (forces parent approval via Family Sharing)
  • Deleting Apps: Don't Allow (prevents kid removing parental tracking apps)
  • In-App Purchases: Don't Allow (eliminates surprise charges)

Ask to Buy (Family Sharing)

Settings → Family → kid's name → Ask to Buy ON. Now kid can't buy apps without parent approval.

Saves: $1,000+ in surprise charges over 2-3 years for typical kid.

Bark / Aura Family (Premium Monitoring)

Bark Family ($9-$99/yr): AI monitors texts + apps for cyberbullying, depression, drugs, sexting. Doesn't show parents all texts (privacy) — flags risky patterns.

Aura Family Plan: similar, plus VPN, identity theft monitoring.

Recommended by: therapists, school counselors. Worth it for: tweens + teens.

Common Mistakes

  • Screen Time passcode same as iPhone passcode (kid bypasses)
  • 'Allow All' under content restrictions (defeats purpose)
  • Not using Family Sharing + Ask to Buy
  • Installing third-party apps that bypass filters
  • Allowing In-App Purchases (kids buy gems / lives without thinking)

Tricks Kids Use to Bypass

  • Changing time zone — disable in Privacy
  • Asking Siri to disable Screen Time — set Siri restrictions
  • Using Safari incognito — disable Private Browsing
  • Deleting + reinstalling apps — disable app deletion
  • Camera scanning Screen Time passcode — pick passcode not visible from camera

Verdict

Screen Time is built-in, free, powerful. Most parents don't fully use it.

30-minute setup with Screen Time passcode + Web Filter + App Store + Ask to Buy + Communication Limits = comprehensive family iPhone safety.

Add Bark Family ($9-$99/yr) for advanced monitoring of tweens/teens.
