What Safety Check is

Settings → Privacy & Security → Safety Check. iOS 16+ feature designed specifically for survivors of intimate partner violence, stalkers, abusive family members. Emergency Reset = one tap removes everything in 60 seconds. Manage Sharing & Access = selective.

Emergency Reset workflow

When acute danger requires immediate action: Emergency Reset removes ALL location sharing, signs out other devices, resets system privacy, removes Family Sharing, deletes trusted phone numbers, resets two-factor settings. iPhone is locked down to ONLY this device.

Manage Sharing & Access (selective)

Choose specific people to stop sharing with. Choose specific apps to revoke. Less drastic than Emergency Reset. Useful when you want to maintain some sharing (kids' Find My) while removing abuser access.

Location revocation specifics

Find My → People you share with — Safety Check shows them all. Revoke specific or all. Photos sharing — review who has access to shared albums. Calendar sharing — review. Each app's location access reviewed.

Account access control

Apple Account devices — Safety Check shows all signed-in devices. Sign out abuser's devices. Two-factor — review trusted phone numbers, reset to your number only. Recovery contact — change. iCloud Family Sharing — leave or remove.

Why this matters more than people realize

Domestic abuse survivors often have abusers with full digital access — shared accounts, family plans, location sharing, paired Apple Watches. Without Safety Check, removing all access takes hours and reveals intent. Safety Check does it in 60 seconds with one tap.

Plan around use

Safety Check is designed to NOT alert the person being removed. They lose access without notification. Use during low-risk window (abuser at work, sleeping, away). Have safety plan after — abuser will eventually notice and react.

Resources beyond Safety Check

National Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-799-7233 + thehotline.org. Local DV shelters via 211. Safe Horizon. Tech Safety project (NNEDV). Apple's own Personal Safety User Guide. Safety Check is one tool — comprehensive safety plan needs multi-layer.
