1. Restart — Just Power Cycle

Slide to power off, wait 30 seconds, power on. Solves:

  • Apps frozen but you can still navigate
  • iPhone feels slow
  • Bluetooth or WiFi acting weird
  • Random glitches

How: Hold side + volume up button until power slider, slide right.

2. Force Restart — When iPhone Is Frozen

For when iPhone is completely frozen, won't respond:

  • iPhone 8+: Press Vol Up → Vol Down → hold Side until Apple logo (10 sec)
  • iPhone 7: Hold Vol Down + Side
  • iPhone 6s and earlier: Hold Home + Side

Doesn't erase data. Safe to use anytime.

3. Reset Settings — Selective Wipe

Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Reset → choose specific reset:

  • Reset All Settings: Wipes preferences. Keeps photos, apps, messages.
  • Reset Network Settings: Forgets WiFi networks, resets Bluetooth, cellular state. Use when WiFi/cellular acts weird.
  • Reset Keyboard Dictionary: Removes learned words.
  • Reset Home Screen Layout: Restores default app arrangement.
  • Reset Location & Privacy: Forgets which apps you've granted permissions to.

None of these erase your data, photos, or apps.

4. Erase All Content and Settings — Factory Reset

This wipes EVERYTHING. Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings.

Use when:

  • Selling or trading in iPhone
  • Major persistent problems no other fix solves
  • Setting up as new iPhone for family member

Mandatory before selling/trading. Sign out of iCloud first.

5. Restore from Backup — After Erase

After erasing, you can restore from backup at the Setup screen. Sources:

  • iCloud Backup (most recent within 30 days)
  • Mac/PC backup (any date you have)

Restore brings back: apps, app data, photos, messages, settings. Process: 30 min - 4 hrs depending on data size.

Decision Tree

  1. iPhone slow? Restart first.
  2. iPhone frozen, won't respond? Force Restart.
  3. WiFi or Bluetooth acting weird? Reset Network Settings.
  4. App crashes consistently? Reset App-specific data, or Reset All Settings.
  5. Persistent issues nothing else fixes? Backup → Erase All Content → Restore from Backup. (Sometimes the iCloud backup itself is corrupt — set up as new and restore manually).
  6. Selling iPhone? Erase All Content + Sign out of iCloud (don't restore for the buyer).
