iPhone Portrait Mode Not Working - How to Fix
Portrait Mode not blurring backgrounds? Fix depth effect and Portrait Lighting issues.
๐ฑ Check Portrait Mode Compatibility
Portrait Mode requires specific hardware:
- Rear camera: iPhone 7 Plus, 8 Plus, X, XS, XR, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 series
- Front camera: iPhone X and later (TrueDepth camera)
- SE 2nd/3rd gen support Portrait for people only
๐ Fix #1: Get the Right Distance
Portrait Mode needs proper distance:
- Stand 2-8 feet from subject
- Camera will show "Move farther away" if too close
- Move closer if too far
- Wait for yellow "DEPTH EFFECT" or "Natural Light" text
๐ก Fix #2: Improve Lighting
Portrait Mode needs good light:
- Works best in bright, even lighting
- Avoid very dark environments
- Outdoor daylight is ideal
- Indoor: face subject toward window light
๐ฏ Fix #3: Choose Clear Subjects
Portrait Mode works best with:
- People โ Optimized for faces
- Pets โ Dogs, cats (iPhone XR and later)
- Objects โ Clear edges, contrasting background
- Avoid: thin hair, transparent objects, similar colors to background

Dirty lenses affect depth detection:
- Clean all camera lenses with soft cloth
- Pay attention to the smaller lenses (depth sensors)
- Remove fingerprints and smudges
- Check for scratches on lenses

Force close Camera:
- Swipe up from bottom and hold
- Swipe up on Camera to close
- Reopen and try Portrait mode

A restart can fix camera glitches:
- Hold Side + Volume buttons
- Slide to power off
- Wait 30 seconds, power on
