What is a Passkey?

A passkey is a cryptographic key pair stored on your device. To log in: site sends a challenge → iPhone signs it with private key → done. No password to type, no password to phish, no password to leak.

Why Passkeys Are Safer

  • Phishing-proof — passkey only works on real domain
  • Breach-proof — server only stores public key
  • No reuse — different passkey per site
  • Biometric-locked — Face ID/Touch ID required to use
  • Backup via iCloud — never lose if device dies

Sites That Support Passkeys (2026)

Google, Amazon, GitHub, Apple ID, Microsoft, PayPal, eBay, Best Buy, Costco, Target, X (Twitter), Adobe, Discord, Bestbuy, Walmart, TikTok, Robinhood. Most major banks coming 2026-2027.

How to Set Up a Passkey

  1. Visit site (e.g., amazon.com)
  2. Account → Security → 'Set up Passkey'
  3. iPhone Face ID prompt → confirm
  4. Done. Next login: Face ID instead of password.

If You Lose Your iPhone

Passkeys are backed up to iCloud Keychain (encrypted with your Apple ID password). Get a new iPhone, sign into Apple ID, all passkeys restore. As safe as iCloud is — which is very safe.
