Passkey basics

Passkey is a cryptographic key pair. Public key on website, private key on your iPhone (Secure Enclave). Authentication = website challenge, iPhone signs with Face ID, sends signed challenge back. No password to phish.

How to enable passkey on a service

Most services: Account Settings → Security → Add Passkey. Service shows QR code on screen. iPhone scans → uses Face ID → passkey created. Passkey synced to iCloud Keychain → all your Apple devices.

Security advantages over passwords

Passwords can be phished, leaked in breaches, reused across sites. Passkeys are unique per site, cryptographically signed, never transmitted. Cannot be phished — phishing site can\'t trick you into signing for real site. Eliminates entire class of attacks.

Cross-platform via QR codes

Need to use passkey on Windows or Android? On the other device, choose 'Use a different device'. iPhone shows QR code. Scan with iPhone — Face ID — done. Passkey stays on iPhone, just authenticates other device.

Recovery + iCloud Keychain

Passkeys sync via iCloud Keychain. Lose iPhone? New iPhone signs in with Apple ID + iCloud Keychain restores all passkeys. Apple Account is the master credential — protect it with Stolen Device Protection (iOS 17.3+) and hardware key.

Services with passkey support

Apple, Google, Microsoft, eBay, PayPal, GitHub, Yahoo, Best Buy, Adobe, X (Twitter), Shopify, WhatsApp, Amazon. List grows monthly. Major adoption makes passkey-only authentication realistic.

Hardware key backup for paranoid

YubiKey 5C NFC as backup auth method. Required for: Apple Account, Google, Microsoft, GitHub. Stolen iPhone + cloud account compromised? Hardware key still works. Multi-device hardware key strategy for high-threat individuals.

Migration strategy

Don\'t panic-migrate everything. Start with most-important account (Apple Account), then bank, then email, then daily-use accounts. Service supports passkey + still works with password — gradual migration. 6 months in, you\'ll wonder why passwords existed.
