Passkey concept

Passkey = cryptographic key pair. Public key stored on website. Private key stored on your iPhone (Secure Enclave). To authenticate: website challenges, iPhone signs with Face ID, sends signed challenge back. No password to type. No password to leak.

Why passkeys are 100x more secure than passwords

Passwords: phishable (you type into fake site). Reusable (one breach = many compromised). Memorable (weak). Stolen via keystroke logger. Passkeys: per-site keypair (no reuse). Cryptographically signed (no phishing). Private key never leaves iPhone Secure Enclave. Cannot be leaked.

How to set up passkey on a service

Most services: Account Settings → Security → Add Passkey. Service shows QR code on screen. iPhone Camera scans → Face ID → passkey created. Passkey synced to iCloud Keychain → all your Apple devices auto-update.

Cross-platform via QR codes

Need to use passkey on Windows, Android? On other device, choose 'Use a different device'. iPhone shows QR code. Scan with iPhone — Face ID — done. Passkey stays on iPhone, just authenticates other device. Power-user move.

Recovery + iCloud Keychain dependency

Passkeys sync via iCloud Keychain. Lose all Apple devices: recovery via Apple Account password + Recovery Key (set up Settings → Apple Account → Password & Security → Recovery Key). Without recovery key + lost devices = account loss. SET RECOVERY KEY UP NOW.

Services with major passkey support

Apple, Google, Microsoft, eBay, PayPal, GitHub, Yahoo, Best Buy, Adobe, X (Twitter), Shopify, WhatsApp, Amazon, Coinbase, Cloudflare, AWS, GitLab. List grows monthly. Most major services in 2026.

Hardware key as passkey backup

YubiKey 5+ supports FIDO2 — same passkey protocol. Apple Account + Google + Microsoft passkeys can be backed up to hardware key. Lost iPhone + cloud account compromised? Hardware key still works. Highest-paranoia setup.

Migration strategy

Don\'t panic-migrate everything. Start: most-important account (Apple Account), then primary email, then bank, then daily-use. Service supports passkey AND still works with password — gradual migration. 6 months in, you\'ll forget passwords existed.
