iPhone Not Receiving Calls? 12 Fixes That Work

Swipe down Control Center — look for a crescent moon icon (Do Not Disturb) or any colored Focus icon. If one is active, tap it to turn it off. Also check Settings → Focus → Do Not Disturb and ensure it's not on a schedule that activates during your waking hours. iOS 15+ Focus modes can silently block calls from non-favorites without any obvious indicator.

The physical switch on the left side of your iPhone — if it shows orange, your phone is in silent mode and calls won't ring audibly (though they'll still come through). Flip it toward the screen to enable ring mode. This is embarrassingly easy to miss, especially after pulling the phone from a tight pocket.

Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringer and Alerts — make sure the slider isn't at the far left (zero volume). Also verify "Change with Buttons" is ON so the side volume buttons actually control ringer volume. If it's off, the volume buttons only control media volume and your ringer stays at whatever volume it was last set to.

Settings → Phone → Blocked Contacts. If a number you're expecting calls from appears here, tap Edit → remove it. Also check Settings → Messages → Blocked Contacts — blocking in Messages also blocks calls from the same number.

Settings → Phone → Call Forwarding. If this is toggled ON and forwarding to another number, all incoming calls are silently redirected — your iPhone never rings. Turn it off. This is sometimes accidentally enabled when setting up a second line, a work phone system, or certain carrier features.

Settings → Phone → Silence Unknown Callers. If this is ON, any number not in your contacts, recent calls, or Siri Suggestions is silently routed to voicemail — you never hear it ring. Great for spam reduction, but it silences legitimate calls from new numbers. Consider turning it off if you're expecting calls from unknown numbers.

Control Center → Airplane Mode ON → wait 30 seconds → Airplane Mode OFF. This resets your cellular registration with the carrier tower. When an iPhone's registration gets stale, the carrier may route calls to voicemail before the phone even rings. Toggling Airplane Mode forces a fresh registration.

Settings → General → About. If a carrier settings update is available, a popup appears automatically — tap Update. Carrier updates fix known call routing issues and VoLTE/WiFi Calling compatibility problems that cause missed calls. If no popup appears, you're on the latest carrier settings.

Use a SIM ejector tool (or a straightened paperclip) to eject the SIM tray, remove the SIM card, inspect it for damage or debris, and firmly reseat it. A SIM that's slightly unseated can show signal bars but fail to receive calls. On iPhone 14 (US) and later, which are eSIM-only, try removing and re-adding the eSIM: Settings → Cellular → tap your plan → Remove Cellular Plan, then re-activate via your carrier app.

A full restart re-registers with the cellular network and clears the telephony daemon state. Hold Side + Volume Down → slide to power off → wait 30 seconds → restart. After restarting, give it 2 minutes to complete carrier registration before testing with a call.

Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings. This resets cellular configuration, VPN settings, and Wi-Fi passwords. It forces a clean re-registration with your carrier and resolves deep call routing issues that survive restarts. You'll need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords afterward.

Settings → General → Software Update. iOS updates frequently include telephony fixes. If calls are still missing after all these steps, contact your carrier — they can check for account-level call forwarding rules, verify your number registration on their network, and confirm your SIM is properly provisioned. Sometimes the issue is on their end entirely.
