Suddenly seeing "No SIM" or "SIM Not Valid"? This is usually fixable without a repair. Here's how to troubleshoot step by step.

⏱️ 5-15 minutes 💪 Easy 💰 Free

🔍 What Error Are You Seeing?

  • "No SIM" — iPhone doesn't detect a SIM card at all
  • "Invalid SIM" — SIM detected but not accepted (carrier lock issue)
  • "SIM Not Supported" — Phone is locked to another carrier
  • "SIM Failure" — SIM card is damaged or not seated properly

🔧 Fix #1: Remove and Reseat the SIM Card

This fixes the issue about 50% of the time:

  1. Turn off your iPhone
  2. Find the SIM tray (side of phone, small hole)
  3. Insert SIM ejector tool or paperclip into the hole, press firmly
  4. Remove the SIM card from the tray
  5. Check for visible damage, dust, or debris
  6. Gently clean the gold contacts with a soft cloth
  7. Reinsert the SIM card — make sure it sits flat in the tray
  8. Push the tray back in until it clicks
  9. Turn on your iPhone

Pro tip: Make sure the SIM is oriented correctly — the notched corner should match the tray shape.

🔄 Fix #2: Restart Your iPhone

A simple restart can clear temporary glitches:

  • iPhone X and later: Hold Side + Volume Down → Slide to power off → Wait 30 seconds → Hold Side to turn on
  • iPhone 8 and earlier: Hold Side/Top button → Slide to power off → Turn back on

✈️ Fix #3: Toggle Airplane Mode

This resets the cellular connection:

  1. Open Control Center (swipe down from top right)
  2. Tap the Airplane icon to turn ON
  3. Wait 30 seconds
  4. Tap again to turn OFF

📱 Fix #4: Check for Carrier Settings Update

  1. Go to Settings → General → About
  2. Wait 10-15 seconds on this screen
  3. If an update is available, you'll see a popup — tap Update

⬆️ Fix #5: Update iOS

Outdated iOS can cause SIM detection issues:

  • Settings → General → Software Update
  • Install any available update
  • This has fixed SIM issues for many users after major iOS releases

🔁 Fix #6: Reset Network Settings

This resets all network-related settings (you'll need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords):

  • Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings
  • Enter your passcode
  • Phone will restart

📞 Fix #7: Contact Your Carrier

If nothing works, the issue might be carrier-side:

  • SIM card might be deactivated — Call your carrier to verify account status
  • SIM card might be damaged — Request a free replacement SIM
  • Phone might be locked — Ask about unlocking if you paid off the phone

Carrier support numbers:

  • AT&T: 1-800-331-0500
  • Verizon: 1-800-922-0204
  • T-Mobile: 1-800-937-8997

🔒 "SIM Not Supported" = Carrier Lock

If you see this, your iPhone is locked to a specific carrier:

  • Check lock status: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock
  • If locked, contact the original carrier to unlock
  • Most carriers will unlock for free if you've paid off the phone
  • Third-party unlock services exist but vary in reliability

📲 Using eSIM Instead?

If you're using eSIM and having issues:

  • Settings → Cellular → Check if eSIM line is active
  • Try: Settings → Cellular → [Your eSIM] → Turn On This Line
  • Contact your carrier if eSIM was supposed to be activated

⚠️ If Nothing Works: Hardware Issue

If you've tried everything and still see "No SIM":

  • SIM card reader might be damaged (common after drops or water exposure)
  • SIM tray pins might be bent or corroded
  • Logic board issue (less common)

Test with a different SIM card from a friend to rule out SIM vs. phone issue.
